HELP HELP HELP 99 r* hypercharger, cobras, 2 Years, 3 Months ago
So I decided to start a winter project....BANGS HEAD ON DESK.....

I put a hypercharger on my bike...and decided to tune the carb better....it was way off and burning rich before.

Got a 175 main jet....1.5 jet on top....needle set to 4th from top....one spacer

I can not for the life of me get this thing to run right....

I can blip the bike...against what most road stars like...lol this means I can pull the throttle quickly....but if held in a certain spot in low range....it stalls out or pops....backfires in the carb too...I've seen flames from the carb.

I can start normal....use choke...turn off.....

However in the low power area....if i pull back the throttle slightly she starts chugging...popping....and hesitating.

its really driving me crazy

once i get back a little on the throttle she seems fine...rumbles makes noise....but pops a little.

Is this lean? or Rich? or what do I do....tried adjusting the pms screw....not much change

HELP!

It sounds like you might need to move your clip down one notch on your needle. Just a thought.

Thats what it sounds like to me. You are fine at more open throttle positions (so main is probably fine) and your good at idle at start up (so pms sounds in range). The initial throttle positions are all about getting the taper of the needle in the right position.

Im sure some others will chime in and check me on this if there are some other opinions too.

If you really want to nail it, you need to do the WOT and confirm your main is good. Its an extra step but it helps to know your foundation is right before you start making a lot of adjustments.

If your popping happens at or near open throttle positions, that may be a lean main. If its happening in the upper midrange of the throttle, then it should be helped by raising the needle.

There is a reasonable possibility that the main is too large. But need to know more, like what pipes, is the manifold ported, are baffles in, what brand was the 175 main, what brand needle, and what clip are you on now?

well its ohio which means its 28 degrees today with snow and wet roads.....somehow the wot test may not be a complete option just yet...I did brave a ride around the block though...and its not good taking off...lots of hesitation and popping. unless i rape the throttle.

cobra slashcut pipes...baffles in....main 175 by kurayakyn kit that came with hypercharger...she had the 165 in her with the bak. the instructions said to use the 205....that wasnt good.

maybe go back to the 165 main eh?

needle is factory...I got one with the bak thats not as pointed.

manifold is stock...but I have an aluminum ported one. just cant use the hypercharger with it.

I Get the bak should be better...call me a kid but I like the look of the hypercharger on it. looks beefy.

sorry to be pesty

Its up to you Barry, but with your configuration its going to be close to impossible to get it tuned right with the stock needle. I would really suggest you see if you can get a deal on a Baron's jet kit. All you really need out of it is the needle, but they won't sell it by itself.

The hypercharger can be a great air kit, but its tweeky to tune. The stock needle is just to fat for your new airflow, and you will end up having to go up on the main to make it work right (larger) in order to get enough flow around that fat needle body. Then you will be rich at the more open throttle positions. So it never really balances out.

With the Barons needle there are hundreds of folks here who can share their jetting setups with you to try and help you get it right.

Just my $.02

It will save you a lot of headaches.

hmmm.... Is this a new BAK and the needle that came with it? Thats what you need!

It should have five c-clip positions on it. If it does, its a Baron's needle.

Just an FYI that I found out. Trying to jet a carb in the cold SUCKS!!!I think it would be better to do in "normal" riding temps. Just my 2¢ Good luck. Be safe (w/ the WOT test).
