As has been said ... you really need to get a handle on how much gas/mile you are using.

Fill the tank and zero the odometer. Go for a long ride and then fill the tank up. Note the amount of gas you pot in and the mileage ... that will give you the most accurate accounting.

High speeds can really cut into your MPGs.

I have a feeling that you may have read the odometer wrong.

Fill her up with regular, take it easy (under 55), see what you get and let us know.

If you actually got that bad of mileage, I'd expect to see raw fuel spitting out the tailpipe when its running Good luck, welcome!

I'm no mechanic so excuse my confusion please. Ya'll are saying, for instance, if I put some v-h longshots on my '99 R-S, I DON'T need to have it re-jetted? Cause all these guys (naturally @ the shop, say Oh yeah you gotta rejet!) Also if I put said pipes on my bike, will it enhance mileage &/or performance with aftermarket airkit, or will there be substantial improvement with just the pipes/ I put V-H longshots on a '99 Kawai Drifter I had once, but it was fuel injected. They said they had to do very little mappimg and I could tell a HUGE difference in performance. Didn't change the air intake just added the pipes, so I'm assuming I'd get about the same performance with my Carb bike by just changing the pipes. Any wisdom is on this is greatly appreciated! This is such a good sight!

As long as you leave the air box stock, yes, you can put the Longshots or other pipes on without jetting. With just pipes you won't get any real performance gain but it will seem faster because it sounds so much better. You might get a small gain in mpg because the pipes will lean things out a little. But you will lose that gain from twisting the grip more because it sounds so good. It takes pipes, an air kit, jetting, and a ported manifold to get the best performance gain.

In the pic you found with the aftermarket pipes, did the air box look the same? The PO looks like he's done a good bit to the bike. By the way she sure is purrty and

Any suggestions on a favorite air box to go with the longshots? Is a ported maifold something to be done or something to buy & have installed? Sorry I'm so ignorant, but I'd just like to know a little more before I have these mods made. Don't want to appear to be as stupid as I really am when it comes to this stuff!! Thanks so much.

The ported manifold depends on your skills. Jetting will be required with airbox and ported manifold.(But it is well worth it) You live in texas and so does one of the members here (Curt) and its so happens that he ports manifolds and is a great carb tuner. Get ahold of him and I'm sure he can help get you hooked up.

Never apologize for asking questions That's how we all learn. The Baron BAK is popular. It's easy to tune for and comes with everything you need to do the job. You won't need to go out and buy anything else to get the job done. But there are many good air boxes. A lot of it comes down to what you like the looks of best. You can port your stock manifold or Barons sells ported stock manifolds. Barons doesn't take it as far as people who port their own but they work fine.
