Re:Jetting and MPG 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I haven't had time to cover the inlet to see if the bike shuts off. I checked the oil, it's clean, no smell of fuel in there. No smell of fuel out of the exhaust either. It keeps raining here, so no getting to the bike yet.

Why would anyone replace the pilot jet? I'm not even sure what a pilot jet is.

The bike did have drag pipes and quite possibly a modified air intake. I believe it may have highly modified jets installed.

Lots of air kit and pipe manufactures recommend going to a bigger pilot jet. I would recommend you put the down time due to the rain to use. Go to the tech articles and read through the carb section. That will give you a good education on many things regarding the carb. After that take your carb off and find out exactly what you have in there. You're going to have to know that anyway. You can guess forever and just cause yourself grief and headaches. It's not hard. You can do it. Just be patient.

If you haven't bought a new air filter yet then you can save some money in the long run by buying the K&N air filter replacement for the stock airbox. The K&N part # for a '99 is YA-1699. It's a little more expensive than the factory filter but it'll outlast the bike.

I had the OEM type jets replaced, K&N filter installed, new plugs (I just found out there are 4 plugs), and everything is okay. It is idling a bit high, but I think I can fix that later.
