Nervous- carb cleaning question 2 Years, 3 Months ago
My bike sat for some time, I don't know exactly how long, before I bought it with 3,500 miles on it. The previous owner had it running and I don't think he really had to do much, perhaps it didn't sit as much as I think, but he did put very little mileage on it (300 miles!).
I've been running the bike for 1 1/2 years and have put 13,000+ miles on it. It doesn't run BAD, but I definitely think there's room for improvement. It is a stock 2001 R* with only mod being Cobra pipes. The pipes were put on when the bike was new, and I have the original reciept that shows "pipe and Jet kit" as parts, but it doesn't mention the jet size used.
As I now know (thanks RSC!), the jet doens't need to be changed for aftermarket pipes. I'd like to try it back to stock, and I'm also concerned about any crap that may be just building up in the carb. The $64,000 question (finally) is: Do I have to worry about replacing any gaskets or O-rings the first time I pull the carb apart? I've read several of the carb tech articles and have yet to see mention of any gaskets or O-rings, but I figure something has to keep it sealed up, right? What am I missing?
By the way, I've got my NGK Irridiums that have been sitting on my shelf for a couple months. I'll put them in first, but I've got a feeling that I'll still have to do some carb work, I see black smoke on occasion...
Any advise is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post....

You'll need a 165 Mikuni large head main jet. That should be easy. Finding a stock needle might be a little more hard. Make sure they didn't mess with the pilot jet. No gaskets or o rings to worry about. If they aren't already in there replace the float bowl screws with allen head screws. While you have the bowl off clean everything up in there. Check your float level. Run some Seafoam in the gas for 2 or 3 tanks. Ride the snot out of it to blow everything out. Hit the limiter a few times. After that put the new plugs in. Do the choke knob trim too.

Carmenuchi7 do you have a big air kit? or has the big air conversion been done to the factory air box? maybe that's why it was jetted.

if it hasn't been done instead of taking the larger jet out add the big air!!!!

Muskey
Wasn't the stock jet a 182.5 with the stock needle? Thats what mine was. But as Musky said also check the pilot jet the stock jet is a 35. They my have just changed the pilot if they used a speedstar kit (needle).

182.5 for 1700 carb
165 for 1600 carb

there were also a couple other things Yamaha did to the 1700 carb that are richer than the 1600 carb

Thanks Erb. So the one Fireman has may be the wrong one for a 1600?
