Idles Too High... 2 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
|
Hey guys. I am pleading guilty to doing something myself I've been critical of others of doing before. Asking a tech question before doing my homework. Here's my problem- my '07 Roadie purchased in December and only ridden by me 100 miles, with 1800 miles on it total)is now in Florida with me on vacation and is idling too fast. When I pull in and turn it off, I scare every blue-hair within a block with the backfire.(and my apartment is in a very upscale neighborhood) I'm no newbie to the old Yamaha XS650, having rebuilt mine and rejetted it, but I am new to the Roadstar, and don't have a manual for it yet. Can I set the idle back on it easily if everything else is stock and OK on the bike? And if so, can someone give me the quickie instructions on how to do it right?
Thanks in advance,
OBMF

You will see a little black knob attached to a cable on the right side, rotate counter clockwise.(below carb)

Below and slightly forward of the air box is a knob. That's the idle adjuster. It turns hard but it will go. Set the idle when the bike is fully warmed up.
You can look at the owners manual here - Star

does the idle really have anything to do with a backfire??

Yes. When you turn the key off the motor doesn't stop turning over immediately.

interesting. Tabatha's bike lets out a little *poof* when she turns the bike off, but its not a *POP*....its like a muffled fart we still havent cleaned the carb since she got it, so i attributed the *poof* to a dirty carb. You think the idle should be set lower? i think i told her it sounded a little high the other day, but i think we set it like that because it was having trouble starting perfectly.

First just try letting it idle for 15 or 20 seconds before you turn it off. Give it a chance to settle down.
