There is a pilot jet in the kit, but I don't beleive it came from my bike. It's a #40 and according to the service manual (and clinic members), the stock pilot jet is a #35. So that's what I put back in; 35, not a 40. Quick question; if in fact I was running a #37 pilot jet, would that cause a rich condition and carbon build-up on the plugs?

I'd put a #35 back in. Normally you don't need to go up on the pilot.

It runs richer as the pilot number goes up, so yes the richer pilot may be the cause of the blacker plugs.

Depends where you're too lean. If at speed you get surging, usually means needle. If at decel you get exhaust pop, then it PMS.

3 turns on PMS was at 3AND3/4 turns 2-1/2 turns did not work so went about 1/2 way,still have a little cough on decel but not as bad as before.

Cough through the carb? Try another 1/4 turn on the PMS.

Re:Need Advise from carb guru 5 Years ago
Just wanted to add an update since I rejetted and removed the fuel pump. So far, so good. Bikes running great without the pump but I haven't had a chance to do an acurate check of my gas mileage yet. Filled up after the first 1/2 a tank and was still low; about 33 MPG, but that was riding pretty hard as per Big Bear's suggestion after adding the Sea-Foam. Pulled the rear plugs and they are definitely burning a lot cleaner though. They're now a nice clean "tan" instead of the sooty black they were before.
Attached are some before and after pics and an updated sigpic.

Before the AIS and fuel pump were removed;

After removal;

Still need to reroute the wiring coming from the carb; thought I might be able to run them up and over the frame instead of under the intake manifold. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Thanks again for everyones help!! It's greatly appriciated!

Aaron

I like your filter but IMHO you need to get a knob for the choke and cover those lines like this .....
