Hey Doc...Question! 5 Years ago
You told me to set up my carb with a 170 main, needle on 5th clip, give the WOT a try then to the 4th clip. That was with cobra pipes & a K&N filter straped directly on the carb. Now...for the actual question. I've been poking around on the site and I want to port the stock manifold as well and since I'll be removing the carb anyway...I figure now is a good time! Or, am I changing too much at one time to dial it in. Or, if thats Ok...should my starting point be different since the porting will make me richer.

Good idea .... go ahead and port. It will improve the flow characteristics ... not make it richer.

The previous suggestions are a starting point. A 167.5 also works well for some people (that what I have). The suggesting starting point is just that; you then get to fine tune for you particular conditions.

According to the Ported Manifold FAQ sheet...porting changes the flow characteristics AND causes you to run slightly rich. It also states that a smaller main may be needed, which may explain why yours is smaller (assuming you have a ported manifold). But what do I know...I'm new to this stuff! I just like to argue!

I have a Nemesis manifold.

Here's an example for you .... With my ProPipe I ran a Mikuni 170 and a 37.5 pilot.

When I put on the Baron's, I had to change to a #35 pilot.

When I baffled the Barons, I had to change the main to a 167.5.

That's what I mean about having to tweak the carb from the baseline settings .... unless you're lucky.

As I said, I've seen both 170 and 167.5 work. As the humidity increases (Niagara Falls ?) you need to jet richer so an educated guess ... go with the 170 first. Sorry, can't get more specific than this.

Ha...you forgot to take into account the full moon and the static electricity created by the polar bears! You also forgot that my bike is black which causes a completely different drag coefficient!! ...Ok...I'll try the 170. Thanks!
