Just install my new Barons Big Air Kit on R*
Went for a small ride 60 miles ran great good power etc.you could smell gas fumes at the stop lights.
The Problem when I got back the pipes were full of suit and very black.
It must be rich but I don't know where. Where would You start?

My jetting should be set OK
Main Mikuni 165
Needle set @ 3 From blunt end
Pilot 35
Pms 2-1/2 Turns out
elevation 4200

There was one thing some times it would take a long time to return to Idle. I know this meams some but I can't rember what.

You could probably go a little leaner on the pilot screw for your elevation, try 2 turns outm and see how it runs after fully warmed. I found with mine that when a slow return to idle the pilot ckts was lean. You might have an air leak at manifold to heads , manifold to carb. Also if AIS was removed check to see that the vacuum port on the manifold is sealed correctly. Gas smell is usually and indication of being too rich as well. With the combination of symptoms you might have 2 issues, You could be rich just off idle (1/8 throttle) which is still part of pilot ckt gas flow, and at idle the leak is showing up, and a slow return to idle rpm's. Look for the leaks first, due to if, there is a air/vacuum leak, and you lean the pilot screw, it will get worse. Also check the boot to the back of the air cleaner, yrs past there were issues with the glue/silicon holding it secure.

Agreeing with Erbman. All the bikes I tuned that were slow to return to idle were lean.

At 4200 elevation you have to go one step leaner than at sea level.

After you have verified that there are no leaks, put the clip on 5 and do the WOT test with your current setup. I suspect the main may be too rich. If it is then drop down to a 162.5 and do it again. You should be close with that one.

Did you have the problem before you had it ported? It is very easy to have a manifold to head leak after installation of the manifold. Did you flatten the flange when you ported it?

No I dodn't have any leakd and yes we milled the manifold flat and removed the nubs in the flange and also used a oversized seal. I have check it a number of times with choke cleaner a number of times Im sure there is no leak.

try with starter fluid. I had a small leak that the carb cleaner did not pick up, but starter fluid is more volatile and did find it.

Gee if I could get Curts manifold to seal, I could get rid of my Ban herr leak at the carb. I wonder?

Do you do this with the breather off? Else it's difficult to get to the manifold connections. What's the trick?
