Engine shorted out? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Hi,

I have been experimenting with the following set up on my 2003 with 2000 miles on it.

Stock Air Box
PMS out 1 and 3/4
Vance & Hines Longshots HS

I noticed today when I Really got on the throttle, nearly 60 mph in 3rd gear, on the freeway, the engine shorts out and feels like I am running on one cylinder. The engine came back to normal after 5 minutes and restarting the bike.

I am thinking that the PMS is either too rich or too lean, but confused as to how this rich/lean setting would cause the engine to short out (is that how a fouled plug feels, I hope its not SVS )

I am also looking to open up my air box and do some jetting very soon.

Thanks,
Mike

Getting on it that hard your off the PMS and on the needle or main jet. Might have been hitting the rev limiter. That's what I would guess anywho.

Musky, If I hit the rev limiter, that hard, would it put the engine out of wack for nearly 5 minutes until the rev limiter or ignition module snaps out of it?
I used to have the Dyna 3000 and BAK and would drive it this hard without any problems. Like I said this is a short term experiment that I will soon be upgrading back to a open air box and higher rev ignition. Thanks, Mike

Mocha, you sound lean on the PMS for sure (try 2 1/2 to 3 turns out). Can't say it will affect the wide open running, but when I was running my PMS at a lower rate, it would sometimes stall at idle and generally run crappy at stop signs etc... due to a lack of fuel. Just a thought.BB

Have you checked your float level and the float needle to make sure it isn't sticky?

The PMS would need adjusting if you get on it and it hesitates or you get a popping on hard decel..... as Musky suggests may want to check out the floats and general cleanliness of your carb.... if your ignitor" which tells the coils when to fire" is going out ....it will run okay and then when hot.... screw up as it goes bad....and run better when it cools off.or one coil going bad... but a fouled plug is done.... it wont recover....You can put a dollar bill to the rear cylinder pipe and if it blows it then tries to suck it in the pipe its SVS..good luck with it....Coug

Re:Engine shorted out? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
I thought this was a temporary issue last night when I tried the WOT test, but today just cruising in to work on the back streets, it did it again. This time the engine crapped out big time and I had to putt-putt in to work on what felt like one missing cylinder. The exhaust smelled rich, like a carbon rich smell? This all just started when I removed the stock pipes and put the V&H longshots HS with the stock air cleaner.

I will try to get it back home today and tear it down and check the following:

SVS test with the dollar bill like Cougar suggests
Carb ( last time I checked a couple of months ago, it was all clean inside )
Coils
Plugs
intake leaks ( lapped and ported manifold, O-rings in good condition )
exhaust leaks ( hmmm, would this have any effect )

I think that when I jet and open up the air box, this problem should go away.
Maybe I would consider looking into a new set of Dyna Coils and Ignition.

Are there any do-it-yourself ways to check the coils and stock ignition?

I'm not getting any popping on hard decel, would that indicate I am good on the PMS?

Thanks for all your help, hope I don't have to start a post like this again

Probably a coincidence with putting the pipes on. With the stock 03 carb you should not be running rich. I suspect it's not carb related.

You suggested fouled plugs and that's a good place to start. If the plug is fouled you would smell unburned gas. Try changing out the plugs on the bad cylinder.

If you have OEM coils, put the bike in the garage where it's dark. With the bike running check under the tank to see if the coils are arcing. If so wrap them (or you can wrap them for piece of mind).

The service manual details the procedure to check the resistances of the plug caps and coils.
