"I bought the motorcycle in January with about 12,500 miles on it and the old plugs were covered dry black soot."
As long as they are not caked with carbon I am comfortable with mine. The 1700, if everything you have is stock, factory settings tend to run a bit rich.
Your elevation does play a part here. Was the previous owner at the same elevation? As Flash pointed out you will have some carbon in the pipe. If you feel you have a problem, then I would say get it on a Dyno, and make sure they have a EGA. You can change jets yourself if there is a problem.

Well... Apparently all my local auto-part stores only have the Sea Foam in the Deep Creep spray. On the Sea Foam website they list a spray that is not Deep Creep. Anyone used Deep Creep for this?

Old dog,
Yes, the previous owner lives at the same elevation. I'm going to run the Sea Foam in the carb and not worry about it. The bike seems to run just fine. I do plan to install the Baron BAK and some Vance and Hines pipes this year so jetting is in my future.

I am having a similar issue but only have the heavy black soot on the rear exhaust pipe. Front exhaust pipe it is almost spotless with just a hint of black after a long ride. Working with Curt on solving the issue and need to do a complete exhaust since currently running the stock headers with kromewerks slip ons. Love the sound but like the looks of the road burner double eagles or the vance and hine long shots.

The long shots look fantastic! When I upgrade in a few months, that's what I'm putting on.

Okay, so I didn't have a change to work on the motorcycle until today. I fired up the bike, went for a ride to get the engine nice and warm. Once home, I took off the air filter housing and with the bike running at a high idle, as suggested, I began spraying seafoam directly into the carb. at which point white smoke began to instantly bellow from the exhaust.
I actually thought that it would take a minute or two before smoking white. Anyway, I sprayed seafom at a high idle for about 20 seconds, let off the throttle and then sprayed it until the engine quit running. After that I sprayed more with the engine off (about 10 seconds).
Does is sound like I did this right, or do I need to spray longer with the engine at a high idle?

That's about what I do. Now let that soak in and when you start it more smoke, then none and runs great.

MS1700,
Thanks for the confirmation. Working on the bike has been quite the learning experience and I'm having a good time.
