I'm running the 167.5 and 4th clip. Seems a bit rich for me in the midrange so I'm going to try 3.5.

Re:Need Advise from carb guru 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Ok, here is something that is has recently (in the last 10 days) been going on with my bike. It once again has started to act funny. And I'm not laughing. I added a tach like 2 weeks ago, and I SWEAR it started to run "different" right after the install. Heavy idling, not as much zip, etc... I had run the tach wire to the coil as instructed and found 12v power on the other side of the coil as others here had. Well, I changed that and got my 12v power else where and that seemed to give my zip back (as if I had stole some amps from the ignition to run the tach?). But I still have the heavy idle.
I stated earier in this post my carb settings : 170, 35, PMS was at 3 1/2 , now it's at three. And it's running like crap. I'm going to have to put it back to 3 1/2. At 3 it hiccups, and will stall at stops for the first 5 minutes of riding(after a good warm-up), at 3 1/2 it never did. I find this very odd.
I talked to Scott at barons when I first installed the BAK and he insisted that the pms be at 3 1/2. He also recommended a 172.5 main. I never changed the main, because it was running so good on the 170. What gives? Is there another way to adjust fuel management where the pms is not out so far (like shimming the needle?). I only adjusted it because of the fuel smell at idle, but my mpgs have/had not suffered. Thoughts?BB

I don't know BB

I've never had my PMS that far out. I tried the `172.5 when I first put my Bak on but went to the 170 soon after. Are you real sure you don't have an air leak somewhere?

Well, the short answer is no, I don't know. I don't THINK I do. I'm due to kinda go through things again soon, but it didn't start to act up due to any major changes, just the couple things I mentioned. Mine has NEVER allowed me to run the motor with the pms at less than three (I know ODO tells folks 1 7/8 to 2). It has run so good for the last 1000 miles, thought I was out of the woods carb wise. Guess I was wrong. How is your new settings,.....happy? I'll be tinkering again in there real soon it appears.

Re:Need Advise from carb guru 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Brief update; Did the needle adjustment this afternoon that Doc recomended, so will wait and see how it effects my MPG. New settings are; washer, clip on 3rd groove, spacer, 2 washers. Old settings were as Cobra recomended; washer, clip on 4th groove, spacer, 1 washer. Took it for a ride earlier and everything seems good. At least I know I didn't screw something up!!
Don't know if it's my imagination or if the needle settings would even affect this, but it seems like I have less backfire on decel at low speeds and the throttle response at idle is better. I know the PMS screw can be adjusted to help eliminate the backfire issue, but it wasn't bad and since I knew I was going to be adjusting the needle settings I figured I'd wait 'til that was done.
One last thing; while I had the slide out I did notice a ridge of carbon? buildup on the backside. Used a 3M pad and "sanded" it off. May have something to do with the conditions I described?
Anyway, thanks again Doc and everyone else that's helped me through this very valuable learning experience of working on carbs. Couldn't have done it without your help and patience!!

In The Wind,
Aaron

Hey BB

Bad gas. Clogged filter. Float level. I don't know. Sorry. I'm just out of ideas but I'll keep thinking about it. My new setting are working great.

BB,

When you slowly turn the PMS in or out, does the engine starts to stumble a bit or can you turn it in or out and nothing happens?

Doc, I must admit, I have big ole hands, and the couple times I've tried to get in there (air box off) to spin the pms in while running, I get burned. I can turn it in quickly , though (to light seat), and yes as it gets close to closed it nearly is at the stalling point. So yes, it is definitely adjusting fuel rate, but since day one, mine would not run good with the screw below 3 out.BB

If you turn it quickly you'll get a false reading. You need to turn it slowly 1/4 and wait for the engine to catch up.

Use a long handled slim screwdriver. You can even buy those flexible ones.

If what you say is true then you may need to go to a 37.5 pilot.
