Re:Need Advise from carb guru 5 Years ago
hey fellow roadies. I 'm new the clinic but thought I would chime in here with a few questions myself. Hope thats ok. I just did a rejet on my 04 R* and gas mileage went down. I was around 37mpg now I'm at 30mpg. Not really the direction I wanted to go!!! haha. These are my settings using the Dyno Kit. 175 main jet, 37 on the pilot and the needle on the 4th clip from the top about 3 1/8 on the PMS. Only mods I have are a stock box with a K&N filter and V&H Longshots with no baffles of course. I'm not looking for performance really, I'm an old guy in a young body (I like to drive slow usually 65 on the Highway) I want good MPG. I was thinking about going back to a 35 pilot keeping the 175 but adjusting the PMS in. Any ideas? I'm really needing to boost my MPG. Thats kinda how I justified buying the bike with the First national bank of Marriage. HAHA
thanks in advance fellas'.

You're on the right track, unload that 37 pilot and go back with a 35. You will see a difference. BB

Where's my manners, Welcome to the Clinic.

Post edited by: Big Bear, at: 2007/05/24 09:28

I am actually going to try this tonight. I am installing a BAK/HK3" big straights. My initial thought is to go with a 170 main 35 pilot 4th clip. I gather that is the setting most people have been going with on setups close to what I am installing. I am a little nervous, but excited about doing it myself. I have done some carb work on old pickups, but I didn't give a crap if they ran good when I was done. I do care about my bike. I can't live without it running good.

Re:Need Advise from carb guru 5 Years ago
O.K. Completed my work. Heres my specs now. 35 on the pilot jet, 170 on the main, Clip on the third grove from the top and PMS out 2 1/4 from seated. Took it for a spin and definitely a difference in power(Less). But Like I said I'm a cruiser not a speedster. Really need that MPG to go up. I'll check the MPG over the next couple of days(its raining today d-mn it). Any opinions on my settings?

Welcom big

If you are using the dyno jet kit and you have a 170 main that's pretty lean. And you are on the 3rd clip with no second washer. Mikuni and Dyno jet numbers are not the same and can't be swapped out by matching the number. And you still have the stock airbox which is pretty rerstrictive even with a K&N in it. I'm not surprised you lost power. If you are going to play with the jetting you really need to go to a more open airkit. My .53 cents anywho.

.53 cent worth huh. Musky, correct me if I'm wrong, but going with the clip on 3, spacer/washer/washer, are you not leaning out the mid-range? But you replied to Doc that it increased mid-range punch. Were you too rich on your previous setting(assuming 4th for blunt)? Doing my homework AGAIN. Thanks,BB

Actually, you replied to me , not Doc (grin-factor up......) fill me in.

Post edited by: Big Bear, at: 2007/05/24 19:13

Hey BB

Yup 3 is one step leaner than 4. The extra washer makes it a half step. So it's 3.5. It improved my running all the way across the board. I don't know if I was "rich" on the midrange before. The bike just seems to like it a half step leaner.

Has the weather cooperated yet enough to let you get a good ride in to test those settings? If so.........BB
