new bike... problems 2 Years ago
Hi guys

I'm new here and I'm from Poland so please fogive me english
I just bought a bike from States, Road Star 1700 2005, 25k miles, stock airbox, V&H exhoust. I've noticed very large fule consumption, gas tank for 120miles. As I bought the bike I did full service: new oil, oil filter, air filter (stock airbox), spark plugs. I noticed that old spark plugs were black so I assume the mixture is too rich. Also when I start to ride the cold bike and I put the clutch on the engine dies and have some problems to start. Because I didn't had any contact with prevoius owner I did'n know what changes he did in the carb, so I checkd. Main jet is 175, needle with 7 grooves, clip on 4th from the top. As I cannot buy stock main jet and needle by european Yamaha dealer and I need to do something about the fuel consuption and rich mixture I need your advice what to do. I ordered a Dynojet kit to change main jet and needle.

I hope everything I wrote is understandable (my english)

Hi Luknor,

Usually when you have the stock air filter, no matter what pipes you have, stock jetting will work. Since the last owner rejetted, it does sound like you are running rich. If no one here tells you how to get back to near stock settings using your DynoJet kit, I can send you my old stock needle & main jet.

Zapraszamy do Kliniki Road Star. To wspaniale miec do nas dolaczysz.

Do you know what size pilot jet you have? Also look in the tech articles for "choke knob trim". Your bike come stock with a 182.5 main jet so your main isn't rich with a 175. I'm guessing that someone changed the pilot jet and didn't need too with just pipes. Stock pilot jet is a #35. When you go back into the carb to check the pilot also check the float height adjustment.(If its high you will run rich). Clean everything real good with carb cleaner. You could also do a poormans BAK.(Check tech articles) Good luck. We will get you all the help you need to get it running correct.

There are several Tech Articles on adjusting the carb and with the limited information you have provided, it appears that you are probably very rich. The stock set up main is a 182.5 in a 35 pilot and the needle is not adjustable. My recommendation would be to go to the Yamaha dealer and purchase the stock main jet, pilot jet, and needle. The European version is the Wildstar, but I do not think the Wildstar was ever offered in the 1700 cc version. Put those in and adjust the PMS. With a stock air box you will only need to adjust the PMS for the pipes.
Good luck, let us all know how it goes.

I will check the pilot jet tommorow, I didn't see any number on it when I was looking to the carb, and I didn't realize that the number is on the side and not on the top.
As I wrote above there are some problems to get the stock main jet and needle in Europe (that was my first thought to go back to stock) as the dealer has no parts for american versions (only those which are the same in Wild Star). Only option was to order a jet kit so I did and as Dynojet has a main jet for a stock airfilter and aftermarket exhoust I choose this kit. To buy stock jets and needle in US was the same in price but I would need to wait for it few weeks. If anyone need more info about my bike to help just feel free to ask me.

Cheers
Luke

Hi guys

Again me . I checked my carb to see what pilot jet I have there. Unfortunately there's no number on it. Today I was fighting with stopping engine. When I start it cold it's fine, after half a minute I turn the choke off and the engine works fine. When I start to ride after 300m when I put the clutch on the engine stops. I already went with PMS to 4,5 turns (as I said above stock airbox, V&H longshots, 175 unknown main jet, needle with 7 grooves, clip on 4th from the top). When the engine worms up it still goes off when I put the clutch on. Yesterday with the same problem I took a ride and I drove up to 4th gear with hitting the rpm limiter, and then in was ok, the engine was nicely going to idle. Any idea...?

Re:new bike... problems 2 Years ago
Hi everybody

I'm getting to know my bike better every day. I just installed a DynoJet kit into the carb. It seems that the DynoJet was there already with 175 main. However, I changed the main jet to 170 as my fuel consuption is very high. The needle is on 4th, PMS 3 turns out, pilot jet from the DJ kit (manual don't say what size). Still I have the same problem with the engine work after couple hundert meters. Today I wanted for a short ride and after maybe 2km the engine started to work only with front cylinder and then died. I returned to the garage and started to think that maybe I shuld install this rubber cork into the AIS system as it's shown in DynoJet manual. When I took the AIS apart I found the same rubber thing in the hose which goes into the AIS' airbox. I took it out and the engine works better at idle. I'm wondering if AIS could have so much influence on engine's work. After I removed this cork the engine didn't died when I ride it but engine was already hot. I said before that the engine dies when it's warm but I noticed that when I will run trough the gear up to the rpm limiter and the engine gets its normal work temperature it runs ok. or this situation I wrote about is normal and some of you have the same?

I hope this won't be a pain to read my "english"

At your elevation, and running a DJ kit you are using too small of a main jet. I'm not sure what mains you got with the kit but you should be running between a 180-186.7 DJ main.
