SVS....AGAIN?!?!?!?! 2 Years ago
Boy am I pissed. Last fall had some SVS issues, did the cure (BIG TIME, huge amounts of Deep Creep and Sea Foam), leaned the HELL out of it, and it was fixed for at least 700 miles. Now, just the last couple of rides I've had SVS after about 1 or 2 miles, continuing until she's completely warm.

I'm down to a 170 main (Barrons), needle is dropped way down (either 1st or 2nd groove from blunt end) Barrons PMS like 1.5 turns, maybe 1.75 or so. Bike is LEAN, takes plenty of choke and several minutes to become rideable.

GOOD GOD HOW LEAN DO I NEED TO MAKE THIS THING TO STAVE OFF THE DREADED SVS?!?!?!?!

How are you warming your bike up?
Someone here told me about three years ago what to do and I haven't had a problem since.
What I do is for a cold start pull the enricher out to the 2nd. click, start the bike and let idle till the idle drops about 30 sec. then it's one click out for about another 30.
Now the important part, I keep the revs up for a couple of miles till the bike is warmed up.
Every road around me is 30mph. for at least 2 miles and I never get out of second gear.
I haven't had SVS in three years now, of course I also don't over fill the oil and am jetted a tad lean, well I was.

I had svs and now I use regular treatments of Seafoam @ each fillup. No more SVS. I recommed "Curts Cure" first and take it from there.

MidStar07 Akron PA is 522 feet above sea level I am at 480. What air cleaner are you running? You should be able to jet some where close to mine and be good. I see you have a ported manifold and a 2 in 1 so the air cleaners is the question. Also like was said I keep my rpms around 1500 to 2000and the bike is happy. We can cure your problem and get you right yet so don't give up.

Hi Curt, Scotto, and Thom,
Thanks for jumping in this round!
First, yeah, I get the enricher off asap, I don't lug it, don't blip it, choke knob is trimmed, Sea Foam in my gas always now, only 4qts oil, etc., etc., etc. And she's definitely lean, at least from the way she runs cold.

Curt, I'm running a poor man's BAK like Paul aka Fireman922. It's clean, but not over oiled.

I did copy your jetting, or so I thought. From there I even had to go leaner, and apparently still not lean enough. It's crazy.

You used to run Barrons jets though, didn't you? Like a 172.5?
Now I see you're mixing the Barrons needle with the Mikuni main jet. (I only have the stock Mikuni and a handful of Barrons)

Still, I don't think the main is the problem. Tried a larger pilot jet for a while, hoping to cure the ping. Now, of course, I'm back to stock pilot. Heck, might want to go to a smaller pilot jet??

Something else must be very wrong. Could float height be doing this?

Float height = Yes.

If the float height is not properly set then you'll be chasing your tail. Try to set it a bit lower than OEM.

Are you running the stock needle?

Baron's jet kit uses Mikuni jets.

Valves and lifters....yeah, if I can't cure it with chemicals and jetting, then that's where I'll go next. Thanks wykrzyknik.

Oh, I forgot about the Barons/Mikuni connection. OK, then Curt is up to a 180 main, wow.

So, re: Float Height. We measure the float height with the carb upside down, right? So when you say "lower" you mean higher when it's upside down so that it's lower when it's installed, right?

LOL .. yes ... when I mean lower the float sits lower that stock when mounted.

I have a 1600 and I started running mine about 8-10 mm lower than the mating surface; OEM setting is 2-3 mm.

I have had a presistent rich problem which I have been chasing for years. I thought I'd try a much lower float setting this year to see what happens.
