BAK Jet Settings 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Hello everyone, I need some help please. First I will give you the info on my bike.

07 Roadstar Midnight
AIS Removed
Cobra Speedster Slashdowns
Everything else stock, altho I will be installing the BAK after re-jet

I installed the pipes myself about a month ago and they sound great. I ordered the Barons BAK and it has finally arrived. I have been trying to decide whether to re-jet myself or not. It is not something I have done before but am willing and interested to try but I don't know what settings to use, and am not sure if the ones that came with their kit are proper or not. I also would like to know if everytime you need to adjust a setting, as I read in here that seems to happen a lot when you first re-jet, do you need to take the whole carb out again. I think I read the needle can be adjusted without the carb out, but the screws cant? Is it usually the needle that needs to be re-adjusted? Since I put the pipes on it seems like it idles rough at first start up but as it warms up it runs smoother, will this be fixed once I re-jet. Just for info the bike is also scheduled for her first service in about 10 days and I was thinking that it would be wise to try to have the re-jetting done before then?

Sorry for the long story, I am definately new at this and just want to make sure that I dont make things worse. So can you guys tell me:
1) is this a job that someone new should attempt?
2) what settings should I use for my set-up
3) once set how do I test and what do I look for to see if the bike is running right.
4) do i need to keep taking the carb off to re-adjust.
5) does the yamaha dealer just re-jet to the recommended settings of the BAK and not do any testing after that?

Thanks for your input everyone.

Post edited by: Rusty, at: 2007/05/26 06:51

I can't really tell if you have already had some jetting done or if your dealer has done something or not. It was a little confusing in parts. Anywho:

altho I will be installing the BAK after re-jet
The BAK comes with the jets and needle that you use as part of installing the BAK.

I also would like to know if everytime you need to adjust a setting, do you need to take the whole carb out again.
Nope. You can change the main by taking the float bowl off. You get 4 hex head bolts for the bowl with the BAK. If you need to tweak the needle you take the tank off and then you can get at the top of the carb.

I think I read the needle can be adjusted without the carb out, but the screws cant?
Not sure what screws you mean. If you mean the main jet read previous answer. If you are talking about the PMS you don't need to take the carb off for that either.

Is it usually the needle that needs to be re-adjusted?
You will most likeley have to adhust it at least once.

Since I put the pipes on it seems like it idles rough at first start up but as it warms up it runs smoother, will this be fixed once I re-jet
Probably not. The Roadies are cold blooded and run rough until they are warmed up. Nature of the beast.

1. It isn't hard. There is plenty of info in the tech tips that you should read through before you start.

2. Good as any starting point is - 170 main, clip in 4th groove, PMS at 2 1/4 turns out.

3. You should do the WOT to make sure the main is good and then tweak from there. It explains about it in the Tech Tips.

4. Nope

5. Don't let the dealer do it. They will set you rich and you will have to re-do what you just paid them to do.

You've got to ask yourself one question: "'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya ....?."

At best you do it once, at worst multiple times. If you aren't patient and don't want to take the carb off multiple times then leave it to the dealer. But, that it itself can become a frustrating experience.

I think I read the needle can be adjusted without the carb out, but the screws cant? Is it usually the needle that needs to be re-adjusted?

That's correct. You could also change jets with the carb on the bike after the first time but it's a bit awkward. You can pull the carb off the manifold and turn it upside down to change a jet.

Since I put the pipes on it seems like it idles rough at first start up but as it warms up it runs smoother, will this be fixed once I re-jet.

You probably need to re-adjust your PMS but you need to pull the carb to remove the PMS plug.

Just for info the bike is also scheduled for her first service in about 10 days and I was thinking that it would be wise to try to have the re-jetting done before then?

I would.

1) is this a job that someone new should attempt?

It's a good place to start. Just remember if you screw it up you can always go back to the original settings. Nothing is unfixable .... unless you drop the carb.

2) what settings should I use for my set-up

170 main
stock pilot
needle on 5the clip from the top
PMS about 2.5 - 3

Do the WOT test as described in the Tech Tips section. Once that's OK then drop the needle to 4, re-adjust the PMS doing the in/out procedure and test drive.

3) once set how do I test and what do I look for to see if the bike is running right.

It will tell you.

4) do i need to keep taking the carb off to re-adjust.

Jets- yes. Needle - no

But you will have to take the tank off.

5) does the yamaha dealer just re-jet to the recommended settings of the BAK and not do any testing after that?

Usually Yes, but it depends on your dealer ..... and how much money you have.

Don't forget to read the carb articles in the Tech Tips section.

Dealer will set you up to rich and you could end up with SVS like I did. It isn't hard just take your time and you will finally get it. I am an old hat at it now my carb thinks it has zippers on it. It is really something you should get familiar with as you can blow a lot of bucks by the time you finish. To me it is a challange and it feels good when ya get it right.
