Jetting info requested 1 Year, 11 Months ago
2001 1600 Roadstar Silverado
Baron Nasty's - no baffles
Baron ported SR intake manifold
Baron BAK
Baron jetting kit not installed yet.
Elevation 500 ft

I need help deciding how to jet and the other settings in the carb when installing the Baron jet kit.

Directions mention "NOTE: Baron adjustable needle - The top is the blunt end of the needle."

Is the blunt end the flat end closest to the clip?

I've read people mention using washers when adjusting the needle. Are these the washers that come stock on the carb or do I need to buy other washers?

THanks!!

No baffles can make it a pain to tune. I would start with clip on 4th groove, count down from blunt end, spacer 1 washer. and yes, the stock needle with have 2 washers, one below the spacer and one above the clip, the above clip one is to give a flat seat for the tiny spring under the cap, so be very careful when you pull the cap that gets to the needle that spring does fly, and pull straigt up, and push straigt down or you could possibly break one of the fingers that hold the cap, use a bit of saliva on the o-ring to make it slide on easier. Since no baffles, either a 170 or 172,5, I would start the pilot screw at 2.25 tuerns out to 2.5 turns out, go for a at least a 15min ride and set the idle adjustment again. and after the ride, you might still need to tweak the pilot screw, due to no baffles. out is richer on pilot screw.

Good advice, with no baffles you may be able to go as low as a 167.5 jet, but 170 will probably be the right one. Set it up and take a WOT test to see if you are lean, then tweak with the PMS. I would recommend new plugs at the same time so you can check them for an indication of the running condition. Good luck.

Unless you know how to read plugs, really won't help. Need to read plugs with the "chop" method, and new plugs as well, for each ckt that you chop in. meaning you get up to speed for that ckt, say for main jet, get up to at least 3/4 throttle, hold it there for about 30 sec, kill the engine with kill switch, pull clutch, coast to side of road, and read plug. not a simple task., then if you want to check mid-range, again, new set of plugs, and start again. It's a heck of a lot more easier to use someone that knows how to use a dyna and an exhaust gas analyzer, but if you let them carb tune, it will cost some bucks as well.

I am assuming they are not baffled because they are loud and when i look up into the pipes, i see no baffle
They are the older Nasty's, maybe the first version that came out. Makes my RS sound like a Harley indeed
This bike runs rich since I put the Nasty's on about a year ago. I never added the jet kit cause I'm lazy but thought I'd better do it since 32 mpg is too rich for my blood.
I bought the Nasty's used. The bike had HardKhrome 3" sideburner pipes and I did not like them because they weren't loud enough and they sound funny to me. With the sideburners, the bike did not run rich and I know they were baffled. The sideburners also rusted bad and ticked me off because I thought they had a life-time warranty against rust.

at 32mpg, sure it was not jetted? with a ported manifold air kit, it had to be jetted or it would run too lean with the stock jetting, mostly due to the thick stock needle. If they are baffled, you might even be able to lean the needle ckt a half step by going to the 3rd groove spacer and 2 washers, and maybe the pilot screw too. You should be able to get min 40mpg at a solid cruise at 65mph, and up to 50mpg depends if tuned for economy or tuned for performance. there is no real right or wrong, other than being too rich, or too lean, but there is some slight leeway in the middle ground.

when I had my stock carb, I had a 167,5 3rd groove spacer 2 washers, 2 turns out on pilot screw and the accelerator pump turned off, it was tuned for economy and got 50mpg on a solid cruise. It did lack a bit in performance, but not so detrimental that it mattered for my style of riding. I run the 42 now, a whole different ball game as far as setting it up, more tuning options, and each ckt has much better separation, so to be tuned individually, I always felt the stock carb was more of a balancing act to set it up because of the over laps between ckts.

Baron's jet kit calls for the 175 main jet with pipes that have no baffles. I am at 480 ft above and I had Bub Stubbies on my 05 with torque chambers. I ran the 172.5 main, needle on 3 with two siver washers and a 35 pilot. Follow the instruction with the Baron's jet kit and you should be OK.

Just getting around to changing the jet and making notes so I can keep track of what I did.
Apparently the needle had already been changed. It had 6 slots and was set to the 3rd clip.
Main jet was notably smaller but had no size stamped on side.

I installed 172.5 main jet and set the needle to the 4th clip.
Removed PMS screw and installed Barons extended screw and set to 2.25 turns.
