Changing jetting, changing sound 1 Year, 11 Months ago
OK....hopefully not a stupid question.

Will changing the jetting cause the bike to sound different? I leaned mine out quite a bit over the weekend. The exhaust sounds the same, but now the motor is a lot noisier. It almost sounds like something is loose. Pretty sure I buttoned up everything just fine, plus it's running just fine. I can hear the noise a little on a slight decel, but mainly when it's idling.

Just making a lot more noise now that it's lean compared to when it was rich.

Does that make any sense at all to you carb gurus?

Thanks....greeny

Depending on how lean you went it will run hotter. That could cause thinning of oil and louder engine noise. Just a thought.

I dropped my main from stock to a DJ175. The clip is on the 4th groove thinking that would richen it a bit since I was using the leaner main. I didn't have a DJ180 to use.

I also changed the oil a couple days before that, but used the exact same kind of oil/filter as I took out. The bike sat in the sun all day today and I first noticed the sound this afternoon right after starting it. I initially thought something was loose on the bike.

Is there a method to check if you're running too lean?

Thanks Dave....greeny

Look in the tech articles in the jetting section and do a WOT test. Actually reading the articles on jetting will give you a pretty good understanding of how to properly jet your bike and how the carb works.

Pull your plugs. Black=too rich. White=too lean. Tan/dark tan=good

How fast will your plugs color according to a rich/lean condition? I just put in new ones a week ago is why I ask.

Thanks RH....greeny

Thanks Dave....I'll try the WOT. And trust me....I've read/reread all that preparing me for this moment. There's some very good stuff out there on jetting.
