PMS 4 Years, 12 Months ago

OK, I want to adjust my PMS. I'm running rich and I want to lean it out a bit. So, I've got the air cleaner off (do I need to do that?) and I have the bike up on the jack and let us say I've got a flat head screw driver that fits in the hole; which way do I turn the tool to lean it out; clock wise or counter clock wise? Those of you who are grinning at my naivete should recall that you were as uninformed as I am at some point in your motorcycle adventure. So grin on and give an old fart the help he needs. A "Wrench" I'm not, but a "Rider" I am. I fell in love with this bike the first time I saw her. In less than three years I've put 34,000 miles into our relationship. I'm thinking that gives me "creds" to ask dumb questions here at the clinic.

Hey JM if it runs better after it warms up or with the choke engaged then its lean counter clockwise....out is richer my suggestion is turn it 1/4 turn test ride it.Before making any adjustments ,I would suggest doing the WOT test if you havnt already done it.WOT can be found by clicking on Tech tips at the top of the page and going to the carb folder where there is also an article on ajusting your PMS...when you adjust your PMS turn it all the way in till it seats lightly counting the rounds as you go then back out and add 1/4 turn....easiest way to keep count is to mark your screwdriver ..by the way there are no dumb questions asked only unasked ones as far as I am concerned..Coug

Post edited by: Cougar, at: 2007/06/02 06:09

The reason I think it is running rich is because I can smell gas when I stop, I get a bit of black smoke when starting are blipping the throtle, and my MPG is down to 40 from close to 50 when I first got the bike. Stock air box with holes drilled fore and aft, K&N filter, and Hard Krome Sidewinders. Jet kit installed by shop but I don't know what all is in that.

No dumb question, You're right , we all started somewhere. Blackroadie is probably right, if she was jetted by a dealer, she is most likely overjetted (rich) therefore spending extra gas and down goes your MPG's. Your riding her alot, so in the long run, it would probably be to your advantage to lean her out some. Save you in the pocket anyway, and could ward off other issues. Carbs are alot like family ; you really don't want to get involved, but once your in the middle of it, you find out it is not as bad as you thought. Plenty of info on the carb in the tech tips and by using the search mode. And yes , on the PMS in = leaner, out=richer. Just my 2 cents.BB

Big Bear, this is a tricky question. When the carb is off the scooter and turned upside down then lean is clockwise and rich is counter clockwise. When the carb is mounted and you want to lean it out you would turn counter clock wise. Remember "Righty tighty Lefty loosey" In this case it is righty (turn to the right) is leaner closing the PMS, and Lefty is looser opening the PMS. To lean out the PMS working with a mounted carb, turn counter clockwise to close PMS. As recommended by Cougar do a 1/4 turn at a time and test. Change can take some time.

That's cool, as I see your point. But I actually said "in" and "out". It is very difficult (but not impossible) to screw up "in" and "out". I know because I personally have pushed vigorously on doors that said "pull".BB

OK. I'm with you so far.
When the carb is mounted and you want to lean it out you would turn counter clock wise.
Huh? Whether the carb is right side up or upside down, the "lefty loosy, righty tighty" rule still applies. You still turn the PMS clockwise for leaner and counter clockwise for richer.
C'mon now. Is this a joke?

That's correct.
You still turn the PMS clockwise for leaner and counter clockwise for richer.

That's incorrect. Think about that one.
First of all you turn it counterclockwise (in) to lean it out when the carb is right side up (as it's mounted on the motor). If you turn it upside down then you turn it clockwise (still in) to lean it out.
