I can't help you much on what it does but you should be able to see light thru it. Bump this back to the top so someone with a better explanation can help.

What year is your bike? I think that there is one year (1999) that the starter jet was solid. At least I know there was something that is solid on the older ones that isn't on the newer ones. Maybe Doc or Erbman will pop on and they will know for sure.

Found a post from Musky like a year ago on this. He said only the 99's had a hole in the starter jet. Not sure what it's purpose is, especially if it doesn't have a hole in it.

Regards....greeny

I believe the starter jet is part of the internal part of the choke ckt. when the choke is pulled it just dumps raw gas so the bike is extremely rich to start. Only thing I can think of with the starter jet with a hole was allowing a bit of air into the mix as well, so it would not be overly rich, maybe Yamaha found that it's just better to just dump gas?? I could be wrong, but it wouldn't be my first time either. lol
