Re:In Search of Better MPG!! 4 Years, 12 Months ago
hmm.. just got home after a couple days on the road...been reading this post. 2005roadstar, I did exactly the same to my bike last week. exept for the factory airbox, I changed the pipes and removed the ais. Started getting the svs crap, so I wanted to lean it out a bit. Went to a 175 main, 37 pilot, needle @.. washer, clip in 4th, spacer, washer, 2 1/2 on pms.... milage went from 38-40 down to 28-30. I went back and put the 35 back in. Then put the bike away. I havent been able to get it out yet to check the milage, but I will this weekend. Curious to see what it's gonna do. Hoping it comes up some. Next will be to do the needle up to the 3rd groove and so on. Dryriver.. I only hope I can get up to 39 mpg

BB,
Haven't made anymore changes yet; going to run through another tank of gas and see what kind of mileage I get. But the last check was 38.7 MPG on straight interstate riding, running 65-75 mph. What seems kinda strange though, if my gas gauge is any indication, is that I'm getting great mileage in around town, stop and go riding. To me thats the opposite of what it should be. Would the leaner settings cause that? Will post an update after my next fill-up.

In The Wind,
Aaron

I personally get 43-44 mpg's around town ,no W/S , no bags, but heavy handed, and I'm just a big guy. Interstate with W/S and bags, cooking 75-80 mph, it drops off to around 35-38. It might just be how it is. Are you satisfied with the new carb settings? Curious.BB

Too soon to tell really. Bike seems to be running very good, if not a little on the lean side. Has some throttle hesitation off idle until the engine is fully warmed up. Before making any more changes (have thought about going back to factory settings) I want to run through a couple more tanks of gas and check the MPGs and the plugs and make sure I'm not running too lean.

Blackroadie,
Any update on the MPG issue? Just curious because it seems our situations are very similar. You should notice some improvement by going back to the 35 pilot, but if it's like mine, it was only a slight improvement; about 2-3 mpg increase, maybe close to 5, depending on how I was riding. Where I've noticed the biggest increase so far is by moving the clip up to the 3rd groove.
Good luck!!

Aaron

Here's my update.. took the bike out yesterday, kinda started a little harder than it has since I had the valves adjusted. Took off for town, 15 miles away. When I got to town and rolled up to the first light.. it stalled. Took a while to fire but when it did it was running rough. Checked the choke just to make sure it was in and took off, it smoothed out a little going thru the gears then the next light ..stalled again. when I got it started, running on one cylinder, again! Just like 3 weeks ago when I took it in to be fixed. Yamaha was within 2 miles so ran straight there... coasted into the lot. Got the head wrench out there to listen to it, he couldnt believe it. Said it sounds like the same thing. man, I went off on Yamaha, the stealership, etc. etc. long story short... they have the bike again, gonna work on it tomorrow, I'm calling Yami HQ, someone is putting the newer heads on it , or regrinding, whatever. I refuse to go thru this anymore!Guess I should post a seperate piece.. I need to know all the info about the regrind... I have a guy that will pull the heads and fix it all if I get nowhere with Yami. This is rediculous..paying for a bike that I cant even ride unless I ride it hard, add fuel additives to it constantly, make sure the right gas is in it,dont use the choke, keep lowering the oil level, Man I like the bike but this just makes me wanna go see my bud at the HD dealer, sorry guys. Had to vent.

Sounds like you may be on the same track as Cliff.

But look at it this way, they'll fix it right this time and then you'll get the grin back.

Hang in there and good luck,

Doc

That's the problem doc... dont know if they will fix it right this time. The guy I have on the side will fix it at my expense if I go that route. Just doesnt seem right that I should have to.. while yami keeps saying theres not a problem... no more warranty doesnt help me. I'll keep ya up on whats happening.

Update.. went to yami dealer when I got back from detroit today. Havent started on it yet. So I left. Before I got home the big suit from that stealership called me. Wanted my whole story about what happened this time and before.. after 15 minutes of talking he's calling Yami HQ and going to bat for me ..he say's I hope so, would be nice to have the stealer backing me up. He told me he wants to see about putting the 07' heads (complete) on it,and doing the whole top end rebuild, or putting new valves in mine, regrinding my heads , throw the speedstar springs in it and see what happens. With Yami HQ's checkbook.. of course. We'll see. we need to get more of these stealers backing us up. Hopefully it's starting. Update in a day or two. Later all.... sucks not being able to ride.
