I'll tell ya Scott, sometimes these carbs just are weird and it goes against all theory, I had at one time richend the pilot screw by about 1/8 turn, gas went up 2mpg, consistently. And got rid of the decel pops too, the pops were my clue to being lean, but the more gas for the pilot ckt, who'd ever thought mpg's would get better??
when I had my cv carb, it was set-up once, and was spot on, the 4 or 5 I actually had my hands in helping some friends, also all 1 time, spot on tuning. I never really played with the stocker, most just from reading about 5k to 10k worth of posts over the past 5yrs of all various issues and what the fixes were. but when It comes to the 42, I can't really begin to count the various combination's I tried

yea, but a long time ago, it's name picked for my past and present life, now I'm into natural healing TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) medicinal herbs, massage Have my LMT (licensed massage therapist) no longer in practice tho.
Air leak...back fires, excessive decel pops, decel pops from low speed too, slow return to idle, but these are also symptoms of a lean pilot ckt as well. I use starter fluid to check for leaks, much better than wd40, will find even small leaks

erbman02 and scottw :
Since I don`t have to remove the carb(just the tank to try this mod)I plan on trying it. May not be able to get to it till sunday. Have the granddaughter and grandniece Sat.over night.
One thing erbman talked about was leaner needles in his post.
I think in regards to his HR42. I asked in a post along time ago about the differance between Dyno Jet, Baron`s and Speed Star needles.Would love to see a piciture of all 3 together.
I`m thinking Dyno Jet is probley the richest of the 3, since Dyno jet settings are usually too rich for everyday riding, but I`m sure there is defferance between the 3.

Hi Dave, dont forget to move the clip on needle up 1 slot closer to top-blunt end of the needle.
Then install an aditional washer (if there's 1 one already there) under the needle clip to effectively get you a small 1/2 step leaner fuel calibration vs a full step leaner to see how your bike responds perf and mpg wise to ding that.
Good luck...Scott

I have noticed starting off from home the bike is not fully warmed it pops at slow speed idling in 3rd or4th DOWN HILL. SO how does this sound check for leaks go from 35 to 37.5 pilot and from 175 to 170mj? 99 percent of gas around here is E-10, I thought out midwest and west have been E-10 for years?

As far as info passed to me from a reliable source, the DJ and barons are very similar in taper and diameter, but the Dj is shorter by the thickness of one washer, so if the clip were on the same groove, the DJ would be a half step richer than Barons. I don't recall info on speedstar needle. Thats what I love on the 42, the needle are made for the 42m and there are 4 of them, but they only affect cruise mpg. I recently tried to find info on the stock carb needle to see if there were others to try that would also just affect cruise, but came up blank
