Cold coughing! 4 Years, 11 Months ago
My bike has been running pretty good, but not perfect. Yesterday was a little cooler (mid 50's) and when I started my bike (full choke) she warmed up good, but I could smell gas (which makes me think rich, but the choke is on). After a few minutes I went to 1/2 choke and took off. Spit, sputter, cough! She runs fine after she warms up, but last night (again being colder than its been) she started popping on decel(which I thought was gone). To me, it sounds like I'm on the edge of one of my settings. When I set up originally, I was lean and kept adjusting pms until the popping stopped. Do you think I should just add a 1/2 turn or so to the pms or is 4 - 4 1/2 too much and telling me to change something else?

1600, 170 on 4th clip,(spacer under, washer over), #35 pilot, pms 3 1/2

Smelling gas when the choke out is not unusual as you are enriching the circuit quite a bit.

You are correct ..... as the temp drops the bike leans out so you need to richen it up. If the bike runs better after it warms up, it's also a sign that you are probably a bit lean.

Is it quite humid around your area? High humidity means you'll run leaner; high humidity plus cool temps are a more effective at leaning it out.

Usually all you need is to turn the PMS out a bit, but I see you're almost maxed out.

You should verify that you do not have a small leak downside of the carb and that the float level it OK.

Try turning the PMS out 1/2 turn. It should work for the current temps (it is getting warmer as we speak ) but for riding in Oct and Nov you may eventually need to go to a 37.5 pilot. Might be a good idea to pick the jet up just in case.

Also try 2 silver washers under the spacer before changing out the pilot. You'll need to re-adjust the PMS. That may be enought to richen the circuit out without compromising your mileage to much.
