HSR 45 and MPG 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Hi all , lots of questions on MPG expectations on the forum so posting mine . 04 1700 w/ roadhouse duals ( plus thunder monster Baffles ) ,Kury High Five air intake ,Irridium plugs and.... my new this year HSR 45 , bought the 45 because it was a good deal from a member here . After experimenting with Jets needles etc Im getting solid 46 MPG (US Gallons) Loaded with two up ..me 210lbs Better half 145 lbs , full Bags and a Large Tail pack . all full . Great trip thru Algonquin Park and the Muskokas last weekend and Lake Placid area the two weeks before . Best Mileage per tank was on Shell mid grade 89 octane . Yes I usually run 87 regular but its interesting ....I get a measurable improvement using the 89 . For what its worth .HSR 45 settings , 27.5 pilot ( idle air out 1.5 turns ) 60 pump nozzle , Mikuni 175 main jet , 97 needle with clip in third from bottom ( middle position ) . I know allot of HSR 42 users will think these settings rich , but the extra throat size of the 45 seems to need them . Runs Great right thru the range , yet still need a little choke to start on first revoulution even on hot days if Sits for 5 minutes or more . NO AIR LEAKS !! I do love that Carb !

Needle Manufacturer: mikuni #98
Needle Clip: 2
Jet Manufacturer: mikuni
Main Jet Size: 165
Pilot Jet Size: 22.5
PMS Screw Manufacturer: mikuni
PMS Turns Out: 2+- a tad depending on temp
My Elevation (ft): 745-*

My jets are leaner, but I run the needle higher..

You're confusing me.

If you're on 2, the needle sits lower (leaner).

Why do you say that?

Doc

Must mean the he runs the clip higher which puts the needle lower. He is running the leanest needle on a leaner setting for the clip with a larger jet I guess is what he is trying to say.

I'm on the second groove from the pointed end, not sure how many are above me, my main is a 165. Curt is correct, it is the leanest needle and I suspect I run on the main a little more at cruise speeds than most, as my pilot is a bit lean also, remember that the slide/needle is directly connected to your hand..when I really twist the throttle, I am a bit rich, but with the larger throat, the air/fuel mix is not off much. I only think this because if I do a lot of twisting my MPG will drop down quite a bit, I can cruise at 65mph and squeeze 47 to 50 mpg, but if I am zipping between stoplights or running a bunch of twisties, the MPG will drop into the mid to high 30s..With a HSR, I think you need to re-think the jetting combinations a bit because of the direct connection to the slide......IMHO

That is what confused Doc is you were counting from the needle end and not the blunt end. I got all my goodies today. Jets all the way from 185 to 160 in 5 increments, all the needles, and pilots on each side of standard. Got my needle on 3 and the standard pilot with a 160 main. I can't really test it yet got a lot to do to get the bike back road worthy so it will be a while. I do have it dry mounted and will right up a test gas tank to fire it up but can ride it for a while.

I appologize, I have been here long enough to know better...... I haven't been in my carb in over 2 years, it is very tunable but probably not as ECO frendly as the CV........more sensitive to temps, and also altitude, so you may need to fiddle with the pms a bit more. I adjust my pms about a 1/4 turn in or out depending on the season..With your love of tuning, I think you will be in hawg heaven......

Well your probably right and with all the parts and jets I have for it the combinations are never ending. Guess I should keep a log of what I do and the results that I get from each change. Wish I had access to a free dyno otherwise the fees would put me in the poor house.
