which jet kit do you like et. al. 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Hello All ... I was wondering if any of you guys have a suggestion as to which jet kit to pick up... I'm driving a '05 and just added the speedstar K&N filter - way to lean with stock jets... in order to keep the cool filter until I've had a chance to jet I was able to install the stock air cleaner under the K&N. This has helped, but I'm still a bit lean, but it will survive the few months left of the riding season... I'm also planning this winter to do the stage one modification on my pipes... Any input at all will help.
Also, when my bike is very hot (idle for 15 min or greater) and I shut it down and try to restart it, it pukes gas out of the carb / air cleaner and tries to flood...and when I say pukes, I mean gas running down the side of the engine... I'm wondering if the carb is getting hot enought to cause the gas to overflow the bowl... It's happened to me twice now... both times after a long idle time, and no time to cool down...
Thanks again. ~Dave

Dave,

My impression from discussions on the R* Forum is that there seems to be a preference for the Mikuni jet kit. Comments seem to be that it's much easier to tune our carb using the Mikuni and the needle is more efficient.

Until you jet, have you considered turing the PMS out a bit.

As for the 'puking' carb .... I've seen a few post re this problem. Occurs mostly when the engine is hot and the gas 'boils off'. It's quite possible that you have some dirt in the carb bowl which has worked it way into the float bowl needle seat and jams it. Take the bowl off, the needle out and clean out the passages with compressed air. Once you put it together also check out the float level. I believe for the '05 it should be .2 mm above the mating surface.

does mikuni make a jet kit, all I can find is the individual jets and pins... if I do go with ala cart... what sizes should I go with?

The problem with 'a la carte' is that you won't get the adjustable needle. Although it's much more expensive, you're better off getting a jet kit as the kit will include the adjustable needle.

Click on one of the ads at the bottom of this site for Baron or Maxair (if you refresh the page each one will eventually come up) and see if they have something for your year of bike. Yamaha also sells a jet kit as part of their SpeedStar accessory line.

anyone know what size the jets are in the speedstar / mikuni kit? I see yamaha lists the same jet kit for the 1600 as the 1700 ... and if I have a 182.5 mikuni jet to begin with and the kit gives me 1 or 2 jets that are smaller than what I have stock... it might not be worthwile for me to buy the entire kit... ~Dave
