Under normal circumstances you should be getting much better than that.

Musky & RK, your points are well taken and I'll get that needle on #4 ASAP. Just ran out of time with the trip. I figured it was so rich before and is running so much better now, it may not be too much worse. I've put about around 60 miles on it so far and it has just under 2/3 tank left. I think it's pretty close. Thanks again...I'm learning from you experienced guys. Look for an update Monday.

Back from my little trip. Best mileage with the 37.5 pilot was 36mpg(I got a 35 Pilot yesterday at Humble, TX Yamaha...good guys there! Will be changing it out tomorrow and setting the needle clip on 4th clip to test more. Reporting back then. Thanks gang.

Well, it's Monday and here I am. This morning I replaced the 37.5 Pilot Jet with the stock 35 Pilot. Also, moved the needle clip from 5th position to 4th. Also, soldered the PMS to a 2", "L-shaped" hanger/screw (same shape as an allen wrench (10 sec. adjustments!)no more burns!). Results are that at WOT in 2nd and 3rd gears I CANNOT induce backfiring even if I go down to only "one" turn open on the PMS. Choices are either 3rd clip or 168.5 jet? She is hitting the rev limiter while still pulling strong in both gears. Float level doesn't appear to be causing any "flooding" and it's not running out of fuel at WOT. I'm on my way to get a 168.5 main. What y'alls verdict?

Set-up:
35 Pilot (Mikuni)
170.0 Main Jet (Mikuni)
4th clip position
Hand Ported Intake Manifold
V&H Long Shots
Kuryakyn Hypercharger Pro
AIC deleted

Basically it goes like this. Slow is on the PMS. Medium is on the needle. Fast is on the main. There is overlap and it's not that cut and dried but it's OK for show and tell. On the WOT you are way past the PMS. You are even past the needle. You are on the main. That is what the WOT is for. Do the WOT with the clip in the 5th groove. If the WOT shows your main is good go to the 4th groove and then adjust your PMS. Then ride it for a while and see how it runs and what your mileage is.

Or you can wait a few and someone will disagree with me and then you'll really be confused. Or maybe I will

I you're going for the 168.5 make sure you ask for the 167.5 - there is no such thing as 168.5.

Ok, Doc. Got me..I meant to say 167.5...I got that, and a 165 which I'm fixin' to go to tomorrow. I've already tried the 167.5, adjusted the PMS down to 1/2 turn open with no popping or backfire on decel. Now, Mr. Musky, help me here...my understanding of the PMS is that it forms the baseline for ALL fuel (like the cup starts at 1/4 full)and the 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle being supported primarily by the needle (which is partially contingent/limited by the Main Jet size?). Then at WOT and the needle mostly out of the Main Jet, now WOT is mostly affected by the Main Jet. I'm probably over simplifying here, but help me with the fine points. Now if the float is too high and allowing too much fuel in the bowl, the pilot jet may also over-supply that "baseline" supply?
I seem to be feeling that the throttle is getting lighter and the bike also feeling lighter. I think it's getting close, though. You guys straighten me out because I'm sure I "think" I know more than I actually do (just enough to get in trouble. If I go down much more in Main Jet sizes I'm afraid the bike will just disappear from the garage!
This is really helping...and I should have a complete set if Mikuni main jets when this is over

I was talking about you saying that you couldn't get a backfire at WO with the PMS set at 1 turn. At WO I don't think your PMS is doing much. The WOT is only to see if your main is too lean. That's all. It won't tell you if your main is rich. If the main is good then you go to the needle and the PMS. But I'm no carb Guru. I ain't even a spert so I'm sure there are fine subtleties that come into play. If you get backfires on normal decel the PMS might help. Or backfires when your taking off. If I'm wrong please hop in and let me know. Like someone wouldn't anyway

And to all the carb Gurus out there - Put the collective brain power together and come up with a rich main test.
