Hey blackroadie

Back when there was a lot of posting on the RSR about SVS it seemed like Yami would OK the fix if the dealer called them and said it was sticky valves. If you got a dealer who wanted to play dumb you were screwed. If you called Yami you were screwed. But if the dealer called Yami you had a good chance. So hang in there.

Latest update; My search may be coming to a close!!! I may fall a little short of the low to mid 40 MPG range that I was aiming for, but if plug condition is an indication of how the bike's running (see the thread on Spark Plug Condition?), I think I'm done tinkering with the jetting and needle settings. After my last two fill-ups I'm averaging right at 40 MPG. I know that's not great, but the bike's running great and I don't want to still be messing with this the week or two before heading to Yellowstone. (We leave June 28th!) So I'm going to leave it as is, put some more miles on it and see how it goes.

And I'd like to say a big THANK YOU!!! to everyone that helped me through my first experience of rejetting and carb adjusting. Couldn't have done it without you!!!

If you really wnat to increase your gas mileage, you need to find what conditions your bike is happy at.
"Fuel atomization" is the key to efficiency. Fuel will always atomize better when the manifold vaccuum is highest (On carbureted models)
What to do: Get ahold of a vacuum gauge and mount it on your bike and hook it up to the manifold vaccuum port line that opereates the AIS system.
Under all speeds and conditions your vaccuum will drastically change depending on throttle position AND engine rpm's.
If you are pushing a severe headwind in 5th gear at, ...say 60 mph, your vacuum may be low because the engine rpms are low and your throttle is 1/2 open or so.
If you downshift to 4th gear and raise your rpm's you may be able to cruise at the same road-speed with the throttle only at 3/8 open insted of 1/2 open.
Your vaccuum gauge will tell you which is better for the highest vaccumn equals better efficiency.
It would seem that an engine at lower rpm's would use less gas than if it were running at higher rpm's, but if your vaccuum (fuel atomization) is poor, then your combustion will be innefficient due to large amounts of fuel droplets not being burned properly. (The engine may have to "work" harder in 5th than in 4th when pushing wind at around 50 to 65 mph.)
Just something to think about if you care about your gas mileage on your vehicles or bike. -StarMyram

I was reading through this thread and when I read the post by StarMyram my head exploded.

I did 500+ this weekend, mostly highway miles in good weather and little wind and ended up with 52 mpg.

Final update.....I hope!!
Couldn't leave well enough along! Besides, the hesitation off idle was getting to me so I made some final adjustments per Doc, and Phil at the RSR forum.
Added a second washer to the needle (washer/clip in 3rd/spacer/2 washers) and reset my PMS to 2 1/4, from 3 1/2. Bike is running great, no carb cough or hesitation and so far I'm getting 42.7 MPG (mix of in-town, highway and general cruising), which is right where I was stock, before having the bike rejetted. I'm finally done!!!

Thanks again to everyone that helped me work through this. The help and knowledge here at the Clinic (and at the RSR forum) is priceless!! Couldn't have done it without you!!

Aaron

OOOOOOOPS! ....Sorry about that, Da Buckman.
I didn't mean for anyone's head to explode.
Wow!52 Miles per USG is impressive man! Sounds like you got great gas mileage on the weekend. (I can usually get around 58 to 62 Miles per IMP Gallon on my Roadie if I stay close to or just under 100 KM/h or 62 Mph, with NO jackrabbit takeoffs.)
For some reason, Premium gas gets me better mileage lately I'm wondering if the "Digital TCI" is able to advance the spark timing farther without pinging? (I know,I know, ....premium gas isn't good for a Roadie, but it seems to run like **** on regular gas compared to premium grade lately.

Re:In Search of Better MPG!! 1 Year, 6 Months ago
OK guys...I read this entire post and am now questioning my sanity. I am newby to all this also, and am researching "What to do's" on my 05' Roady... I have almost identical bike to that of 2005Roadstar's...with almost the same exact problems. I bought my bike used with 9k miles, it had "shorty" BUB pipes on it that I have traded out for drilled out stock pipes (level 1, I think... will have to read more on this as I aquired them for a former R* owner who went to Hardchromes). I have relpaced my stock air with a big air kit I bought at my local stealership(they installed), had my AIS capped off new plugs, and (not knowing any better at the time...)rejetted...cause thats what I had heard/been told. I am getting just under 35 mpg highway/city mixed, but with all the coughing , stalling, hesitation all combined. Here's what I've been told by my Roady friends (one of which directed me to this site)...
1) order the Barons 170 main
2) use #35 pilot
3) place clip on 4th spacer with washer
4) port your manifold
5) run a tank full of "Seafoam" through a tank of gas (to clean out valves)
6) dial in your PMS (all the way down, back out 2 full turns to start. adjust by 1/4 turns till correct.
Is this all about right? I'm kinda worried after read the ordeal that 2005Roadstar went through...

Your friends are steering you right if you're around sea level.

With the BAK but Stage 1 pipes you'll probably find that although the air's getting in, the pipes are restrictive so you may need to go leaner than the 170 main.
