Most long time riders have had something similar happen along the way and you learn to ALWAYS turn the petcock off when parked indoors. My ride sits 5' from the water heater pilot light so I am damn sure it gets shut off. don't worry about forgetting to turn it back on you will find out pretty quick you forgot when you fire it up.
