Install the exhaust of your choice. Disconnect the AIS and ride.

Dan:

First, welcome to the Clinic.

Second, you'll find that to mod a FI Road Star, there are a couple of things you'll have to do if you install a new exhaust, intake, etc..

1. Search for AIS for removal instructions. There's probably 200+ posts about it. Check on Ebay, there are kits for under $15.00 $20.00 It's easy to do. If you don't do it, you'll pop/back fire like crazy with any new exhaust. It's just the way it is...
2. If you install a new exhaust, make sure the exhaust has the holes for the 02 sensors. Intake is easy.

If you can complete 1-2 above, you can simply enjoy the ride.

As you'll learn, many of us have done the same modifications (for nearly three years now) without issue or purchase of an aftermarket fuel processor/chip. The FI models are very tolerant of modifications vs the carb models.

Dan, I have an 08 FI and I have made a few mods to it. I installed some cobra speedster shorts exhaust and it popped and backfired quite a bit (even after I disconnected the AIS) until I installed the FI200R O2. Most folks will exclaim that you do not need to waste the extra money but mine ran a heap better after I installed the controller. My next upgrade was the MaXair air cleaner assembly and the fuel processor made a world of difference. I have run my bike with AND without the processor and it definitely runs better with. Any questions with the FI bike in terms of add-ons let me know.

Jeff:

I think that you would have found that if you removed the AIS vs disconnected the AIS, your popping and backfiring would have disappeared.

I can't say a bike runs better or worse with a fuel processor. You might be right. I can tell you, along with probably dozens of others, that the bike runs great without it...

Some guys installing a fuel processor that have no idea about advancing/retarding timing, can tell if a bike is running lean/rich, (or where the AIS actually is), are in for a world of frustration if they take the same route... Keeping it simple is probably the best route for most.

Pull off the AIS, put on the exhaust and go riding. I don't know how much easier that can be...

Just my .02

Install the aftermarket pipes of your choice that are made for your bike (including model year), remove the AIS and ride!
