float adjustment 2 Years, 9 Months ago
why is it so hard to set the float with the carb off the bike.. i have seen info on this but just about all float info goes back to the clear tube on the bowl drain check..i have an 07..the last year they used a carb..i have just put in a new needle valve and want to check the float level..guess i will hook it up to a small fuel tank and do the clear tube thing before i put the carb back on, that way the carb will be charged with gas when it goes back on the bike. My pms was set at 3/4 turn out..so i am dropping my primary jet back to stock to see if that works out..would be the 35 stock from the 37.5 cobra replacement..i can always switch it back if i need to.. i think the float was to sit paralell to the housing but it changes as you move the angle of the carb..being on a spring loaded needle..anyone have any ideas on how to bench set the float level on this carb..??

Noticed you had PMSset at only 3/4 out?

Since your bike pic shows you have aftermarket pipes that 3/4 pms setting is way lean, most PMS reiquire at least 2.5-3 turn out (or more) from lightly seated position when just running aftermarket pipe so your 3/4 turn from lightly seated seem's very lean IMHO.

My 06 with pipes only needed to be 3.5 turns out from lightly seated to not be too lean @ idle and also needed a slight tweak of needle jet by placing thin washer under needle clip to get a 1/2 step enrichement to fix a lean issue it when transitioning from low speed to main fuel circut.

BTW,why did you need to adj float lvl in the 1st place?

Hey,Scott.. i wrote a thread a few days ago called "what the hell" because my roadie flooded out in my garage after sitting for 2 days untouched.,so i pulled the carb off and found nothing.Since i had it apart i replaced the needle valve. The new one is chrome and does not get crappy as fast as the aluminum one..anyway,my pms was 3/4 of a turn out from the seated position.I know when i set up my carb it was 2 turns out.Maybe i have a ghost in my garage,i put in the stock pilot jet but decided to do the intake mod and went back to the 37.5 that was in it when i rejetted the carb..only because im reading that rejetting is needed after doing the intake but i dont know if the jetrting needs to go up or down after doing the intake.Curt has some great info on his webite about the intake mod..so i did what he does..flanges and all..so now im going to do the fload level the clear tubing way again as it seems the only right way to do it.So now im gonna readjust the carb all over again, but the flooding issue was probably because my overflow for the gastank was hooked up to the carb inlet where the stock aircleaner vent tube used to be.I had just filled up my tank before i parked a few days before, must have overfilled it and pressure could have built in the tank ,pushing fuel out of the overflow into the carb causing a siphon effect causing my carb to flood..its the only answer i can come up with.I put in a cobra carb jet kit when i put on the cobra slashdown pipes.I will be firing it up tomorrow..stay tuned for the results folks..and Scott..its always good to hear from ya..

In case you're interested you can set the float level with the carburetor on the bike. The spec with the stock manifold holding the carb is 4-5mm above the rear bowl flange using the tube method and the bike level. I use a socket type allen wrench on an extension to loosen the bowl drain initially. After the drain is loose you can loosen and tighten it with your fingers as needed and use the extension to tighten when through.

To save time if I have to remove the bowl for adjustment I only reattach with 2 screws in opposite corners while checking again and when through install the other 2 screws. It helps to have a ball end allen wrench for this kind of work.

Also, I've found that the clear yellow colored 1/8" gas line for weed eaters and the like is more flexible and seals better than the aquarium hose that we all started out using. They usually have it at your local hardware store.

I've found that the 660 Grizzly float valve will, with the float at full drop, flow a little more fuel with gravity feed and set between the 4 and 5mm spec I mentioned than the stock float valve will with the same setting and hooked to the pump.
