Finally taking on my carb! 4 Years, 11 Months ago

Hey all! Finally decided to take on my carb.I'm running a 2005 RS Midnight Silverado with a Stage 3 mod on stock pipes, drilled airbox (3- 1" front + 2- 1" back),and my AIS has been plugged. I live in Winnipeg, MB. Canada at an elevation of 784 ft. I understand the '05 roadie runs a 182.5 jet. Correct me if i'm wrong. Presently, I am definately running on the rich side and want to avoid self induced svs.Mileage has definately suffered. Could the jetting gods advise on a starting point to rejet.I was thinking of going to a 172.5 main on 4th groove.Too low? pilot jet- stock? I'll also tackle porting my maniflod while the carb's off.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!
Chance

I'm no jetting god but this will give you somethin to read until they show up. Yup, 182.5 is stock. Stock pilot is good. Porting is a good thing to do as long as you have it a part. Without the porting you miss out on a good chunk of the performance gains you could get. You might want to have the 170 mik main on hand too. Have 4 allen head bolts to replace the soft stock float bowl screws.
Do the WOT first. - http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/94/96/
After the WOT drop the clip to the forth groove and tweak the PMS.
I'm thinking more holes or an aftermarket airkit might help too.

Sounds OK to me.
Ask Musky said you can start with your suggested 172.5 and then move down to the 170 and 167.5 as needed to dial the main in.
Old Winnipeg boy here also.

Thanks Musky and Doc for the advice! Here goes nothing! I'll let you know how it all went. Nice to see another Peg city boy in the forum Doc! Love to talk some more, but I have to go fog the back yard for skeeters- I'm sure you understand the reference Doc!

Hey Chance I'm just getting going on my carb too, I'll tell you though I've spent more time reading carb posts then actually doing any work I've gotten all kinds of good info here on the RSC.
To all: Is it ok to take the TPS off the carb? In big blue letters on Mr. Tidy it says don't, if not then can you undo the connector where it's tied off on the backbone?

Undo the connector.
If you remove the TPS from the carb then you'll have to adjust it when you put it back and that's more of a pain than undoing the connector.

I've never had the carb completely off the bike. Left the TPS hooked up and just did the first jetting / PMS plug drill at the bike. After that you can change the main, move the needle, or tweak the PMS with the carb all hoked up. Works OK for me anywho.

Take it real easy with the 4 brass screws that hold the float bowl on. I stripped one and had to cut it off with a Dremel tool. I would suggest taking one out and going to a hardware store to get 4 allen screws. I do not remember the size off hand but maybe somone else does. Always a good idea to have a Dremel around.
