mabe a new carb question? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
putting in a speedstar jet kit and found what looks exactly like a dj165 in the starter jet hole. has a small ?mark? and 165 marked on it

carb had stock bowl screws but someone was in it.

had a fat needle( not thin like dj or speedstar ) with 5 slots (washer spacer clip, no top washer)little spring was laying on top of diaphram. amature mistake?

the main was mikuni 165

bike had a hypercharger and vance and hines pipes i know the hyper comes with kit.

what is the stock starter jet suppose to be?

i think the last guy put the kits jet in the starter jet hole because it doesn't look like the bigger mikuni.

current setup
bak
mik 165 main
mik 50 pilot
165 starter
max pms at .5 out
dj needle 0n 4 with the proper assembly
vance/hines classic II with quiet baffles

Here's what I think I know - The stock starter jet is a 57.5, Except for the 99 Roadies they have no hole in them. Your fat needle might be an old style Maxaire needle.

I know this one for sure - Spring laying on the diaphram is a mistake.

What a mess! Start over.

Starter should have no hole so just solder the one you have closed. That's partially why you're at .5 on the PMS.

Mikuni 170 main
Pilot #35
PMS out 2.5 - 3 turns
Needle on 5

Do the WOT test to dial in the main then lower needle to 5 and re-adjust the PMS.

KNOW SOMETHING FUNNY THE HARLEY DEALER WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WAY IT RAN. MY LAST BIKE WAS A 84 V65 MAGNA WITH A COUPLE TWEEKS. THAT THING HAD MORE BALLS THAN ME, SCARY FAST. I NEVER HAD A V TWIN BEFORE, SO I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS THING KNOWING IT HAD MORE AND SMOOTHER POWER.

I HIT THE DEALER THIS AFTER NOON AND GOT A NEW PILOT AND HE SAID BOOK READ 60 FOR THE STARTER ALL HE HAD WAS 85. I TOLD HIM HEY BETTER THAN 165 AND GOT IT TOO.

MAYBE I'LL FINALLY GET THIS THING TO TUNE RIGHT.

BY THE WAY ANYONE HAVE A STOCK LOWER AIR BOX BRACKET THEY DON'T NEED. (BOLTS BETWEEN THE TUBES)

OOOH V TWIN HAS TORQUE.

SOLDERED THE STARTER PILOT
MIK 167.5 MAIN
MIK 40 PILOT
MAXAIR PMS ON 3 TURNS
DYNO JET NEEDLE ON 4
DRILLED OUT SEAT BIGGER
NEMISES MANIFOLD
BAK INTAKE
V/H CLASSIC II
IRIDIUM PLUGS

WENT FOR SPIN AROUND BLOCK (SUBDIVISION )

MUCH BETTER BUT I THINK NOW I FELT THE CLUTCHES SLIP (26,000 MILES)

NEXT MOD IS HC PISTONS AND DYNO 3000

A LITTLE TIP THAT LOOKS COOL. TAKE A SPENT (IE FIRED) 38 SPECIAL PISTOL CASE. DRILL OUT PRIMER HOLE TO THE OUTSIDE SIZE OF THE PRIMER POLISH WITH SCOTCHBRITE AND TAP THE LARGE END OVER THE BOWL VENT. CLEAN UP THE HOSES AND HARD FOR THE WATER TO MAKE THE TURN INTO THE HOLE.( BIKE GOT HAMMERED BY MY PRESSURISED SPRINKLERS AND ONLY HAD TO BLOW OUT FILTER. FORGOT IT WAS WATER DAY )

Let's make sure that 38's been fired before trying this mod or your results may vary.

If you have the regular Max PMS screw ( not the new maxmix) you are equal to 6 turns out for the stock. What seat did you drill out.

Might just need to adjust it. There should be about a nickel thickness of space at the clutch lever.

YA, I WAS EDITING THE TIP WHEN YOU POSTED.

I HAVE THE ADVERTISED AS NEW STYLE MAX AIR PMS, GOT LAST WEEK.

AND I DRILLED OUT THE FLOAT NEEDLE SEAT.

PREVIOUSLY I HAD POSTED THAT I GOT A DEFECTIVE SPEEDSTAR IGNITOR THAT WON'T TURN ON MY FUEL PUMP. SINCE FOUND POSTS THAT IT'S NOTE THE ONLY ONE. I DID A LOT OF INTERNET SEARCHING AND CANT FIND THE NEEDLE AND SEAT LISTED IN THE PUMP DELETE ARTICLE IN THE TECH TIPS. I FOUND SOME ?DELPHI? POSTS WERE A GUY HAD DRILLED OUT HIS FLOAT SEAT UP A SIZE. I DID THAT WHILE CARB WAS APART. BUT GOT A DYNA 3000 IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT. DEALER SAID HE WOULD HAVE TO ORDER A THE STOCK REPLACEMENT SEAT SO I'M TRYING OUT THE DRILLED ONE.

WHILE RESETING THE FLOAT IT SEALED UP REAL TIGHT AND SEAMS TO BE WORKING.
