jetting question again 1 Year, 7 Months ago
I am new here and am sure this question has been asked many many times before. But here I will go.

2003 1600 road star. Running after market (I think Cobra Slipons) and an open air KN filter. Haven't found anyone that can tell me who's pipes I have. No problems until I put on the KN filter. Running too lean. Checked the Pilot, was 3.5 turns out, put that out to 4 turns. Less popping on decel. Runs better but I will change jets.

Picked up a 167.5 and 170 main and a 40 pilot from Yamaha dealer.

Any suggestions before I continue. Thanks much.

Post some pics of your pipes. Someone will likely be able to ID them.
From my recent dyno run I learned that popping on decel can be caused by too lean primary. 4 turns out on your PMS is too far I think. You risk it falling out. A larger primary and fewer turns may solve the popping. You could also try turning up the idle adjustment.

Thanks for your thoughts. 4 turns I know is way too much. That is why I am putting in a different pilot tomorrow. Wondering if I should start at 4 notches or 5 on the main.

Will post a picture of the bike as soon as I can.

Ride safe.

Try it on the third notch first. 2½ turns out from a light seat w/ the PMS. What size main do you have in it now? Try the 167.5. You can try my set-up if you want. Look at my profile. Good luck. Others with more knowledge than me will chime in, I'm sure.

"04" 1700

needle clip---4

main jet----200 (same as Mukini 187.5)

Pilot jet---37

PMS----3

Dyno kit 2nd stage

upgrade exhaust and air kit

she may be a tad rich, however, better than a tad lean, she hits on all the sweet spots, I'd rather have to change plugs down the road than valves

Jetted the carb today. Ended up putting in a 40 pilot and 170 main.

Turned the pilot out about 3/4. Guess a 37.5 pilot would have been better. Does have a better response though. Runs good. Not lean like it was before.

Will putts with it in a few days after I run it more.

Thanks for your responses and all the rest of the info on this site.
