Opinions, how often to clean K/N filters? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
|
|
My BAK filter looks like death warmed over!! Black, couple bugs sucked up in it, etc... I know it doesn't halfta be red and pretty to work right, but it really looks nicer then. So, how often you guys cleaning them? Yes, this question is VERY subjective, but remember, I ride year round, so once a year for a guy who has a 4 month riding season might work great for him. I've probably put 3000 miles on it in 4 month or so.Thoughts?! BB

They can be pretty crudy and still work OK. Clean it when you think it needs to be cleaned or when it bugs you. Won't hurt anything. You need to be one with your bike. Right Doc?

Thanks Musky. Doc thinks that being one with the bike includes using a sawsall on it, he even posted pics! that might be alittle too close to it. BB

I seem to end up cleaning mine about every 1200-1500 miles. Given the variation in mileage at different times of the year, I would say that equates to me cleaning it 4-5 times a year.

The filter is more effective when dirty than clean. Obviously too dirty is not good either. Certainly under normal driving conditions
If you're 'one with the bike' then you'll notice when it needs to be cleaned as the bike runs richer.
So how many miles is that.
This is what K&N says ..... The way to determine whether cleaning is required " is to see if you can can visually identify all of the visible aluminum wire mesh on the top of the pleats. If it is still visible, the filter does not yet require cleaning and can be replaced in the vehicle. The next subsequent inspection should occur in 5,000 to 10,000 miles, once again, depending on driving conditions. Once the aluminum wire is covered with dirt and no longer visible in some places on the exterior of the filter, it’s time for cleaning."

I've had mine in over 10,000 miles and it looks dark but the
wire's are still very visable. Like cougar have not cleaned yet
but knocked the big stuff off.

Thanks guys. I clean the auto K/Ns about once a year. But they are not exposed , so I don't have to look at them in a dirty state, like I do on the scoot. Sure looks better red, but oil attracts dirt, so it doesn't stay red long anyhow. BB

Cougar,
Man you got to be real careful with compressed air and the cotton filter element in a K&N. May be stating the obvious, but will take the risk for those new to K&N. The element is cotton and if you hit it with a strong blast of air it will separate the cotton fibers leaving holes for debris to get into the carb. The cleaning instructions warn not to use compressed air to clean the filter element or it could be damaged. I usually clean mine when it looks like it needs it. So far about every 5,000 miles. It cleans up great with the K&N spray cleaner and a gentle bath with the garden hose. I then let it dry over night and oil it lightly. I do occasionally get a little oil on the rear head pipe, but at least the pipe won't rust
