After due consideration, I decided to start with the easy answer first, bad gas while on the raod...I filled up with the "good" gas from a station I trust and still stuttering...
I then tried adding STP Gas treatment with the tank of "good" gas...the problem got better but still a bit of a stutter...I next ran (now running actually) a tank of 93 octane to see if that had any effect, yes I know hi-test is bad but I figured one tank is not going to kill the bike...the high octane and STP treatment have the bike runing almost normal...
I stopped by the dealer today to make an appointment so I can get the bike 100% for the Maine trip in August. Service manager tells me that they are seeing more and more of this problem and it is being caused by the ethanol gas now being used in our area...seems it does the job of cleaning the fuel system very well but tends to leave deposits that can gum up the jets...he told me I was on the right track with the STP but to use the Techron Fuel System cleaner...they have been getting good results and the vast majority of the people calling and bring bikes in for this problem have not need any service following the treatment.
BTW, I have dome business with this dealership for 29 years and do not think he was BSing me just to get me out the door...he'd have no reason not to take my money and do the
carb cleaning, etc.
I am going to use the Techron and will let you guys know what happens. He recommends using it every 5 or 6 tanks just to be sure...especially so since the f&^%wits are now mandating that August 1st we go from 10% to 15% ethanol
