buy an HSR 42 and ride the way you are supposed to 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Mounted up my 42 a while back. Finally got to ride. I adjusted the idle and that was it. It's damn well perfect! No sputtering, no flat spots none of the crap our stock carb does!!! Its a whole new bike and no doubt there is a wee bit more power too.

My stock carb was well dialed in and still it wasn't the way it should have been....linear and smooth. This one is, its all you could ask for. Forget buying more chrome, you want a happy Roadie put on a 42!!!!!

It's just not fun if you don't get to play with the stock carb JK
Where did you pick your's up at and did they put on your TPS or did you? By the way how much may I ask?
Thanks Al

got mine from a member, do not remember price but it was very good.

I did not do TPS, did VOES and seems to work just fine.

Do the TPS and you'll see you wasted the time with the VOES. I felt no discernible difference from no mod to VOES, but from VOES to TPS, big enough difference to feel, hear and see (seeing was the better mpg's in city riding)

It wasn't until I did the TPS that I realized the difference, and that was when I was first setting up the idle resistance on the TPS. I originally had it set for 700 ohms, so installed, and my idle went to hell in a handbasket (slowed), hmmm, why? come to find that when I tightened the screws down on the TPS, it shifted, it lowed to a low 500ohm and something. Ok, off again a re-set, got it to about 720, all good even after setting the screws, re-install, idle back to a bit faster though than with VOES, so had to lean it a hair. When the TPS is set for idle it proved an approx .8v, .9v signal to the ignition module, the VOES provides a 0v signal. I don't know if that would provide a default in the module or not, I do know when the VOES opens, it provides a 5v signal to module which causes the WOT default timing. The only way to know if zero volt provides a timing change (to closed throttle timing) to the timing curve would be with a digital o-scope. I don't know how that particular IC is set-up, but a zero voltage is the same as no voltage, so if no voltage, then the VOES serves absolutely no purpose other than a lot of us spent the time and the money for naught, even myself. And then, is it all in our minds that there was a chnage? Unless someone at Dyna would know and disclose that info. On another note, the TPS, on either side of the center tap has a minimum of 500 ohms, at least mine does, it never reached zero ohms fully turned, so there is always some sort of voltage signal, it never goes to zero volts. But yet, if the TPS opens, I believe an internal signal would also provide the 5v to keep the timing in WOT, and this would still allow the bike to run. I also ran the VOES in the position to effect the use of the retard switches, never got more than 10 ft, before I would try the next level of retard, so that was a complete failure of testing, oh well, I had to try everything possible.

So yes, you can compensate the idle by making it slightly richer with a VOES or with no mod, but the TPS allowed it to be leaner. The TPS also provides about 15 interloping curves while in the CT curve until it changes to wot curve, then it stays there. I have yet to hook up a volt meter to see at what position throttle is in or at what speed it goes into wot, it's all depends on the voltage signal to the ignition module. I don't have probes thin enough to get past the rubber seal on the connector to get a voltage read, and I was not going to buy probes just for a one time use reading. It was more of a curiosity thing, but, as I said before, since I had the carb configured in every way possible, the big difference was the TPS mod. If I had to do it again, I would just go do the TPS mod.

I know, long winded, what can I say. LOL
Take what ya can, toss the rest.

Erbman I too agree completely. Every carb I have done I had done the TPS.

Erban,

Just another $.02, but the VOES is popular here, and that includes comparisons to TPS on same bike. I have seen it done a couple of times successfully, where the right curves were engaged at right speeds (by feel). I know the choice of specific VOES was critical to making it work, but know little beyond that.

Again, not disagreeing as your experience obviously tells another story. But the guys who did it here understood the aspects you are explaining above and got it working. They chose VOES for its simplicity.

That's great to hear. I love my 42 and think it's the best real performance mod you can do besides the Patrick Racing upgrade. Mine was done by Maxair and they installed the TPS. The carb is so smooth and precise. You can rap the thottle and no stutter.

You are right Gram....I'm simple. Thanks buddy!

Actually simple and lazy, VOES very easy to do. I suppose TPS would be better but jeez this carb is so much better than the stock one it would be hard to imagine it getting much better. I ride seat of the pants and it tells me this is mighty sweet.
