jetting a 45mm 1 Year, 5 Months ago

Well I couldn't leave well enough alone, I've always loved to tinker with all things mechanical and I knew this new bike would be no different.. as some of you know, it is a 2003 with cobra pipes, comp ignition, 32 tooth pulley, hypercharger air kit, and a 45mm hsr. some folks here have mentioned and rightly so, that the 45mm is too big unless something has been done to the engine internally .. well lacking the funds to bore cylinders, roller lifters and cams etc.. I decided to try and lean the carb out a bit as it has been running a little rich. (All this info I've been reading about SVS) So I dug around in my spare parts box that the previous owner gave me and found a little bag with some jets in it.. well that got up my curiosity.. This morning I opened up the carb and found a #25 idle jet,air screw open 3 turns.. installed a #20 jet and ended up with the air screw open about a turn and half. also swapped the main jet from #180 to #175, did nothing to the needle height or size.. I was getting about 42 mpg with the original settings and jets and had a good crisp response to the throttle in all ranges.. Well It still runs great after the changes, not any noticable difference in throttle response but I'm able to even the idle out a little better. I like the idle set very slow, You know, that PO_TA_TO, PO_TA_TO, PO_TA_TO sound. anyway all seems good for now, Im hoping I can get a little better milage and lean it out a little without having to get a new carb..I"LL keep y'all posted as to the results and want to thank all of you for the good info and help...

Same principle still holds ... take it out and try the WOT to test out the main.
BTW .... there's lots of experienced 42'ers on the RSR Forum who can help if you run into trouble.

Thanks Doc, I'm a bit anal when it comes to how an engine runs.. I care how the bike looks, but more important is how it runs..I got a question for ya, How do I post a pic? I took a pic of mystar on my cell phone, sent it to my email, how do I get it to my sig.? I'm a little slack when it comes to computers.. I can get around 85 or 90 in third gear, don't know where it will go from there..

Post edited by: flashback, at: 2007/08/04 21:14

I think I can help you here. You wrote:

Stock idle jet is #25. For your bike w/o mods, probably a good move to drop the idle jet and the main. In order to increase the mileage, you'll have to lean out in two more places. The needle in the carb is probably stock as well, which should be a #97. You can go to a leaner needle #98. Also, check to see which groove the c-clip is in. If it's in the 3rd grove, move it up one to the 2nd from blunt end. This keeps the needle in the pilot circuit longer in the cruising range (closed to 1/4 throttle) and you'll get better mileage. Oh, damn, the 45 doesn't have a changeable accelerator nozzle. BUMMER! The 42 does and that's what I was going to suggest for you but I guess not now. Looks like your only option is the needle dude! But, that will make a difference in MPG's significantly!!

something important here.
roadies ain´t harleys and an idle set too low is NOT good for them. too low and the oil pump isn´t working properly and the pressure is low which isnt good for long engine life.
idle should be set at 800-900rpm. it may seem and sound a bit high, but that´s where the idle is best set

thanks for the info 2eaglestar, The needle was going to be my next mod. but I'm keepin all these parts so I can make the engine fit the carb someday. also I believe I can change the pump jet, but if not, maybe changeing duration will help some. who knows when its all said and done, I may put it back the way it was as it has always seemed to run well. Im playing..but thats how i learn..
erzio, your sayin no potatoes? Oh well, I guess I can live without that, but it will be tough.. don't want to tear things up just for the sake of some noise. I have been kicking around the idea of a tach mainly so I don't over- rev the engine but I guess I'll have another reason for it as well.. 800-900 hundred? I'll bet I won't even need the throttle.. you have any good tips on a tach?

By all means, keep all the parts you pull out. If you're looking for mileage, go to the leaner needle and set the clip to the 2nd notch from blunt end. You'll pickup probably 5mpg+ with just that mod alone.
As for the tach, don't worry about over- rev on these engines. You'll top out if you've got the stock box @ 4600rpm. A tac helps with other stuff. That's one of my next purchases. As far as tips for tacs...it's what you like personally. There are good and bad on the market. Some bounce more than others. Do your research and ask around. I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback out here on what's the best for the R*.
