HSR 42 + 98 Needle 1 Year ago
|
|
I've had my HSR 42 set up as ...
#50 pump nozzle
#97 needle
160 main jets
Yost power tube
Runs great, no problems .... plugs look good except for a bit rich on low end, mostly like due to running the pilot air screw at about 3/4 out.
I thought I'd change out the needle to #98 ... doesn't work for me. The bike ran very cold blooded and had to keep the choke out for it to run without choking all the time.
Rainy weekend so I'm going to verify (again) if any air leaks on the manifold. Puzzling that others have had success with this needle.

Hi Doc,
Mine runs great with the 98 needle, but you are right in that it is now a cold blooded beast. Takes a while to warm up but once there no problems. When I had the stock carb and dyno jet kit in I hardly even needed a choke, but the plugs burned black and the mileage was crap.
As I said before my big problem was vacuume leaks, and I even had problems with a new stock manifold and the jetting was so rich it masked the problem.

I couldn't run the 98 when I had the 42 I had to run the 97. I still have to run the 97 in my 45 and and have a 165 main with the yost tube. I am just on the edge of being too lean I can run my finger around the pipes and only get soot just on the top of my finger prints. I am on the 3rd slot as well. You should be real close to what you need to be with the 97 and the 160 main.

From the plugs, performance and highway gas mileage I think you're right, the 97 (3rd slot) looks like it's the best place to be for me.
Still puzzled by the low end richness. I think I'm going to have to break down and do thorough investigation rather than just riding the bike.

Try going to the 22.5 pilot jet instead of the 25 that should do it. At worst you might have to teak the needle a slot after you do. I think Max Air fits their 42's with the 22.5 pilot if I am not wrong.

Thanks.
If no manifold leaks then that was the direction I was going to head next.
I wish jets were colour-coded ... eyes are getting to old to see the numbers without a magnifying glass.

Check out my jetting on my profile. Maxair put the kit in it for me. Mine was also hard to start but they had my PMS at 3 1/2 turns out. Now I have it at 1 1/2 turn out and it starts righ up cold.

if it's starting up cold without choke, then pilot screw is set too rich.
And Doc
I don't know how many times that I did a needle swap between the 97 and 98 needles, and never touched anything else. If you swapped to the 98 and had to keep the choke on, then see if the plug on the vacuum port is still good on the carb. ( I change mine yearly due to the heat) and check for manifold leaks. Preferably starter fluid, it is much more volatile and will find even the smallest of leaks. I even ran the 98 with clip on the first groove for 6 months without issues, other than a slight performance difference, but gained mpg's to a higher rate of speed.

I've sealed my vacuum port, but I'll check it out this Sat. I intend to get a can of starter spray and give it the go over again. You know how it's hard to find leaks on this beast.
There was a big difference between the two needles for me. I've since gone back to the 97 and everything is back to 'normal' ... or as it was before the 98.
Yes, I found it interesting that the 98 on the third clip leaned it out enough that I need the choke out partially, otherwise it would keep coughing on me.
