BAK Air Filter 3 Years ago
I have a 2005 Road Star Silverado and am adding a Baron's ported intake manifold, the BAK filter and Baron's jet kit. My exhaust system is Vance and Hines Power Shots. I've got a couple of questions. According to the BAK installation instructions, the filter should come pretty much preassembled. My kit is not. There's a "power cone" included as part of the kit and I'm guessing it's mounted to the back of the filter cover over the air intake but I'd sure feel better with a picture or some advice from somebody that's actually seen one mounted!!

Question #2: On jetting, the instructions indicate that the main jet should be 172.5 for pipes with baffles which I think is my situation. They go on to suggest putting the needle clip in the 5th groove and PMS screw out 3 1/2 turns. Right now with my stock set up, I'm getting really good gas mileage, generally over 50 on the highway. I'd really like to not screw that up, if possible! I'm hoping this new filter and jetting arrangement will make my machine more efficient and maybe a little peppier but I really would lean more to keeping the good gas mileage than boosting performance if it comes to a choice between the two!

I'd sure appreciate some suggestions from some of you that's "been there, done that!"

Thanks in advance.

In general, it appears that most riders observe a decrease in gas mileage with the addition of aftermarket exhaust and air kit; however, that may be a function of less than ideal tuning by the owners.

I found the recommended setting for the BAK to be a bit rich. I set my needle at 4 rather than 5.

I don't have the power cone but most of the comments I've seen question its effectiveness. You can see a pic and get installation instructions at: http://baronscustom.com/html/catalog/info/yamaha/roadstar('99-'03)/PI/1/3EF7A88A-DFB6-7E7A-5BC4-D80CB9124793

Thanks, Doc. I appreciate the input. I think you're right about most people running too rich. I read some of Odo's comments and he seemed to imply that it was pretty hard to set the Road Star up too lean -- that it would just be too ragged to tolerate. It appeared he was encouraging people to run as lean as possible while still maintaining reasonable performance. I was wondering if I should go with the recommended 172.5 main jet or maybe even try to back off some to 170 or even 167.5. Also, from what I've read, the fifth clip position is way too rich so I'll start at no more than the fourth clip position. This rejetting effort is a first for me. Fortunately, I've got a buddy that's been through it so I've got him to call on for help and this forum is certainly a godsend!

Thanks again.

It seems that the recommended settings for an 05 with your setup is a 172.5 main, needle on the 3rd clip and PMS about 3.

If you find that a bit rich, or gas mileage too low, you could try a 170 and the needle on the 4th.

Whatever you do, look at the initial setting as a starting point and then change one thing at a time to see if there is an improvement.

Re:BAK Air Filter 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Doc,

Just some info... I set up my R* jetting (2005 with V&H Powershots, ported manifold and BAK filter) to 172.5 on the main, 3 on the PMS and clip in the fourth slot. The bike's performance was awesome. I rode a couple of hundred miles and when I removed the spark plugs they were black and indicated I was running too rich. I've since put the clip on the 3rd position and took it for a spin. The bike still has strong pull through the full range with no hesitation or missing. I'm thinking this is going to be better from a mpg standpoint and also for not carboning up the cylinder heads. Will check the plugs in a couple of hundred miles and see if that's the story!

Thanks again for your help!
