PMS setting with V&H long shots 1 Year, 1 Month ago
Hello

I'm trying to dial in my PMS. I have a 1700 06 Midnight with stock carb, air filter and V&H Long Shots.
The PMS plug is missing and the bike was running rich. Looks like someone tinkered with the adjustment.
Could someone recommend how many turns I should set the PMS.

Thanks
Paul

If they played with the PMS adjustment, need to know what else was done. Did they change pilot jets? Needle, main jet? pms is part of the pilot ckt to 1/4 throttle. Usually for this bike, changing the pipes only, no jetting changes need to be done except remove the AIS and a slight tweak to the pilot screw. Normally pms is set from 2 to 2.5 turns from a light seat. A lot depends on the pilot jet size, and whether it is a mikuni jet or a DJ pilot jet, as well as elevation plays a role

What you can do is take the bike for a ride, and when it is properly warmed, turn the pilot screw in till there is a change, than turn it out till there is a change, then set it in the middle of those 2 points. turn slowly and wait a few seconds for the carb to catch up to that gas flow. And don't forget to adjust the idle adjuster for proper idle speed too.

Thanks Erbman02

I asked the previous owner if he rejetted the carb and he said he didn't.
He did tell me that he installed a Hyperchanger. He had it on for 3 days then took it off because the bike didn't run right with the Hypercharger.
I guess he was trying to dial in the Hypercharger without jetting and didn't know how to set it back to original setting.

Thanks
Paul

Paul warm the bike up to full operating temp by doing a 15 min ride. Once it is warmed up run the PMS in until the engine starts to stumble the slowly turn it out until the engine get the highest possible idle. Once the engine is cool turn the PMS in counting the number of turns until it is lightly seated. Make note of that number and turn it back out that number that is your setting. If the turn are 3 1/2 or more then you need to go up one size on the pilot.

Do you leave the air filter on when adjusting? How do you reach the screw with the air filter on? I have a barons pms screw.

Thanks in advance.

yes, filter on. yeah, sometimes it can be a pain to get to the screw, depending on filter. asbestos gloves might help. lol 42 carb has the pilot screw on top, not an issue for the most part

Thanks for the info erbman02. Would gas dump into the air filter thru the carb mouth if the pms was too rich? I routed the over flow line down to the frame when I went with a K&N filter. Every thing is stock on the carb except the pms screw. The float level checks out per the oem manual. Every once in awhile I get gas in the filter case and then drips on the back push rod tube.

Thanks again,
Jerry
