Running rich 10 Months, 1 Week ago
05 midnight star completely stock 10000 miles. Originally purchased in new mexico but now resides in south texas. It seems to be running rich because it backfires at shutdown and isnt getting great fuel economy (around 38 mpg running 65-70 mostly). Exactly which screw neess to be adjusted to lean it out a little. Does the carb need to be removed to adjust it. Thanks and please excuse my ignorance. This is my first roadie but its not my last. This is my favorite bike ive ever owned and ive put 1000 miles on it in the week 1/2 ive owned it. Just want it running right.

Give us a little background on any mods done to the bike. Jetting if known, pipes, air cleaner mods ect.

I would just pull it off and completely clean. Because of age you need to pay close attention to float needle and seat. If when inspecting needle you notice a little indentation on rubber at tip change it. Cant remember how many times I had mine torn apart before I finally noticed it.

First thing I would do is remove the AIS. It induces air into the exhaust ports to help burn unburned gas fumes and causes popping and backfiring. If it still does it after you get that off then we can trouble shoot more.

I have researched AIS removal on here. Are the steps for the 05 exactly the same as the steps outlined for the 04? Is it the same kit? Thanks
