Carb Backfire 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I have a 2005 RS Midnight. I have installed a DynoJet Jet Kit with a 200 main and removed baffles from stock exhaust. When I blip the throttle, it backfire from the carb sometimes. Also the aircleaner smells like fuel. Any ideas? Frustrated!!!

If you have the stock air cleaner and stock exhaust (Stage 1, 2 or 3 ?) then the DJ 200 is way to rich.

You don't need to re-jet for this setup. I'd run the stock carb setup or a DJ 180 if you want to stay with the DJ needle.

Doc's right about the jetting. If you don't change to an after market air cleaner that flows more air then all you're doing in making the air/fuel mix too rich by changing the jets. Also you have to remember that there is an accelerator pump on the carb that squits an extra stream of fuel into the carb throat when you "blip" the throttle. Even if the carb is jetted correctly and you change the air cleaner to a higher flowing one you will still get an occasional pop from the carb. That's why you will get the pop more often if you are sitting idle and rev the engine to hear that beautiful rumble. It's a hard habit to break (blipping the throttle at a light) but it's best not to do it because it has a tendency to cause the carb to load up with fuel, hense your "pop" and fuel smell.

Sorry to be long winded...I was bored.

I'm skepticle about curing that carb backfire. I believe it can be cured with proper small circut jetting and adjustments. There is a write up "Mucker backfire cure" somewhere in here where he solders one of the air jets and Maxmix makes an aggressive PMS screw that has helped my carb backfire considerably. Also the accelerator pump squirt duration and if it squirts directly down the throat of the carb all have an effect so there is alot of tinkering.
