I need a herooo!! 7 Years, 9 Months ago
Hi everybody i wanna buy the V&H long shots, i m kind of short of money to send the bike to the dealer for installation and jetting and i was wondering if a guy with no much knowledge in bikes can jet it himself? i was wondering if there is a book or info with pics and instruction in how to do it step by step. If you think it is difficult for a guy like me to do it pls don t feel bad and tell me what you think( i don t wanna screw up my bike), i have tools at home and i m a kind of handy man but a little bit scare about touching my bike cause i have never done nothing like that in my life. If you can recommend me a jet kit for that pipes that will perform well, pls tell me the name and approximately the price and if you think i will need any other parts for this modification pls let me know. Thanks to everybody this website it is awesome
Good luck to everyone

If you are just putting on the pipes then you probably will not have to rejet. An adjustment of the PMS may be all that will be required.

You should also remove the AIS if you put on the longshots.

As for doing it yourself .... don't worry about it. I hate working on carbs and I've set mine up fairly well with advice I've received from th forums.

DocShadow thank you but let me ask you this, i called the yamaha dealer and they said if you change the pipe you will have to re-jet, is that true? i just wanna change the pipes cause i wanna have a better sound , i can t spend a lot of money so if i can avoid paying the dealer for jetting the bike that will help me a lot in the other hand i don t wanna damage the bike so if re-jetting is necesary i do it but if it not i would rather leave it like that.
What do you think? the 2 thing you mentioned i have to do what are those parts? sorry i don t know shit about mechanic, tell me how do i figure it out, do you have any info or pics to share?
thank you very very much for taking the time to answer my question
Aloha

If you can afford it, buy a manual. There is also one you can get free for you computer. I'll try and get the link for you.

In this website, you'll notice in the "Main Menu" a section marked "Articles". Read all the articles as you'll find a wealth of information on how to do mods on your bike. In the "Articles - Exhaust - AIS" section you can find articles on the how to remove the AIS (air injection system). The AIS is between the frame, just above the oil filter. The Calif models also have the charcoal canister that I believe can also be removed.

If you put on aftermarket exhaust without removing the AIS you will get a lot of popping. I can't address the dealer's comment but I put on the ProPipe and only needed to tweak the PMS a little bit. I put on the BAK later and the bike needed to be rejetted; it would not run without bucking and popping.

Also go to the RoadStar Riders Forum (the link is in the "Main Menu" ). You will find a ton of info from people more knowledgeable than me.
