Doc, others, quick question 4 Years, 8 Months ago
OK, so I'm leaving for Colorado in a week or so, and suddenly she (the bike........they're always shes in this garage) Acts like her SVS is returning. I did swap in a Barons thumbscrew PMS , and went ahead and adjusted it to 3 1/2 from 3 1/3. Long story short (LSS ) She has had a heavy idle for a couple weeks, and then boom, same old song and dance. I'm up for an oil change, so I dumped a can of seafoam in, then on the next full tank, a bottle of MMO. The dancing has stopped, the idle is still "dirty". I've adjusted the PMS back to 3.

So my question is, judging from my dyno run, I'm alittle (very) rich during the majority of my ride time (needle), could reducing the amount of fuel that is shot in from the accelerator pump help relieve this? OR, could I remove the shim under the washer on the needle to lean it out a bit? Thoughts? BB

Hey BB, how ya doin this rainy afternoon.. Sorry to hear the news..man that stuff seems to be hitting an awful lot of folks, and more than once.. Does Mikuni make more than one needle for your carb? Ive done a little research on the hsr carbs and they have 4 different diameter needles for them..just a thought..

Home do'n chores, watching the rain. I'm running the Barons needle, and have had good results so far, just need to fine tune , I guess. I am a VERY patient person, or so I've been told. When you tinker, be prepared to take two steps back sometimes. BB

If you're always blipping the throttle at lights the acc pump could come into play but I tend to think it's given more credit than it's due.

Most of the time we're riding on the needle and pilot.

First I'd try the 167.5 and don't touch anything else. If that works OK then change the clip to the third slot with two washers under the spacer and test out. When you change the clip you should also re-adjust the PMS.

Make sure the idle is set to OEM or high enough that the engine doesn't lope when you re-jetting the carb.

So your suggesting a main change? No sweat. Move the second washer from the top to the bottom after moving the clip to 3 down (one up). I idle at 900 all the time. I'm a moderate blipper.

Do you feel the main is causing this? (Yes , Doc, I'm asking you to diagnose my bike over the web! )

I'll be fiddling on it later this evening , so I appreciate the help. BB

RFF, new plugs waiting to go just as soon as I finish through this tank. We are getting Severe rain, hence no riding for now. BB

No. It's most likely the needle but I thought you might as well make sure the main is OK. As you move up the throttle the main comes into play. If you do a lot of highway riding/passing this might contribute a bit to the richness.

Move the second washer from the top to the bottom after moving the clip to 3 down (one up).

Yes .... that's correct. You should have two silver washers below the white spacer. Above the clip you can you anything what fits. The washer above the clip is only used to provide a flat firm surface for the spring.

Dooley noted. I'll take a look at that this evening (me hopes). I noticed in your profile, you run a 167.5. That apparently works for you. I've never had success running my PMS below 3 (bike runs like poop). Others seem to pull off anything from 3/4 to 2 1/2 with success. You mentioned adjusting it, you mean the :In till it stumbles, out till it stumbles, in the middle setting? Thanks Doc, BB.
