Is there anything different between the jet kit from Mikuni and the "Speedstar" kit from Yamamama that is supposed to be Mikuni, ie; the needle, etc.?

I believe the Speedstar kit has a fatter needle to go with the ohmigawd big Mikuni jets that come with the kit. The Speedstar kit is all about letting in a lot more gas than, say, a jet/needle kit from Barons and the like. The Speedstar is designed for their stage 1-4 mods, which isn't geared towards clean, lean running and fuel economy...

So, with the numbers that everybody is throwing around on here, how can I relate my Speedstar kit with the standard Mikuni jetting? Without having to buy another jet kit that is.

Speedstar jets are Mikuni jets, and stamped on top of the jet is a number that corresponds to the jet size. THe bigger the number, the bigger the hole in the jet, the more gas flows through. For instance, here's a pic of the stock jet and needle from my '04:



Stock is a Mikuni 182.5, which by most accounts is pretty rich. If my old brain remembers correctly, the jet sizes that come with the Speedstar kit are up in the 200s, no? I've got a DJ 175 in mine now, which equates to a Mikuni 163 or so.

RK gave you some good info.

The best thing for you to do is try the WOT test and try to dial in the main. Once you have that you can play with the clip on the needle to optimize it.

What is you jetting now?

170 main, 50 pilot, 2.5 turns out, 5th groove. The needle was a lot thinner and more gradually tapered than the stock. I was running the 165 main as the kit called for but I ran into SVS, thought it maybe too lean, and upped to the 170 before I found out what was really happening. The scoot seemed to be happier so I left it that way. I plan to get back into the carb here soon and want a tried and tested baseline to start with. BTW, I live on the coast of NC.

Lean doesn't cause SVS. The 50 pilot is mainly a gas eater IMO. I would go back to the stock 35. Have you tried the 4th groove on the needle?

I would say you're real rich on the PMS and needle which is where you do most of you riding. For a base setting try the 4th groove with your 170 main. Go back to the 35 pilot. Leave the PMS where it is right now for now. Do the WOT and if your good then you can tweak the needle and PMS if needed. Now these are just a starting point. You have the Speedstar needle which might change things some but tweaking is needed no matter what parts you're using. My .1111111117 cents anywho.

Oh yeah. If you haven't ported your manifold I would highly recommend you do. It really brings out the best in the rejet.
