Hey Erbman,
The more I read you the more it gets confusing! (don’t worry it’s me!).
First you say the Dyna needle should work just fine and you finish by saying that I will need to rejet my new air kit anyway!?
I do my own basic maintenance but if I need to rejet I will call upon a pro mechanic because I don’t want to mess with that.
Many bikers noticed better fuel mileage with the K&N air cleaner, even up to 47 miles per gallon, is that realistic?

No, did not actually say you will need to rejet. If you have been jetted due to the pipe only change, that did not have to be done on this bike to begin with. And since the bike is an 02, and I don't know when the Dyna jet kit was installed, about 4, or 5yrs ago, dyna changed their needle taper and amount of grooves for the e-clip. Needle taper and grooves makes for the way the bike needs to be jetted to some extent. Some of the other fatter needles out there also require a
pilot jet change, some needles work just fine (Barons and newer
DJ) with the stock pilot jet because the straight portion of the needle is not too fat. But without you knowing exactly how it is set-up it's a crap shoot. If too lean, it may not do engine damage, but it might be lean enough to discolor the pipes due to excessive heat. Happened on my first bike, with-in 15 miles, went from chrome pipes to a golden color.
I know it's a job, just to take a look see inside the
carb, but the more info you have as far as the way it was jetted and what kit was used, will make a difference on what changes to make when the air kit is installed. Keep in mind, most shops jet strictly for performance. but it can be tuned to economy , or in-between the 2 as well. MPG at cruise (65mpr) 40 to 50 is possibly. if closer to the 40mpg at cruise, then it's jetted more towards the performance side, 50mpg at cruise, jetted for economy. go in-between, ya get the best of both worlds.
