Running Rich I think... 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi guys, I've been reading through these jetting posts for days now, thanks for all the info so far! Here's the situation, first of all let me say this is the first carb I've ever taken apart. I crossed over to the R* world from the fuel injected sport bike world. Also let me say that I have no idea what the previous owner has done to this bike other than a Kuryakn Pro-R hypercharger and I think hard krome 2 into 1 pipes... Anywho, I suspected my bike to be running rich for 3 reasons...1 I was only getting 30ish Mpg, 2 I opened her up one day and it would reach about 98mph, I know this isn't a sportbike, has tons of torque not so much HP blah blah..but still I figured it should easily hit 105 or 110, anyway number 3 I pulle the plugs and they were all 4 very black, covered in soot.

So, I pulled the carb and investigated, the main jet looks to be a mikuni 170, which from my reading seems to be in the right ballpark. The needle was clipped at the 5th notch, all the washers and spacers seem to be in the correct position. The two other jets look stock to me, could be and probably am wrong. The PMS was set to 2 3/4 turns out. So I replaced plugs with NGK Iridiums and moved the needle to the 4th spot, turn the PMS to 2 1/4. Before I could test it my buddy broke a litte part in the "needle housing" I know its called something else but its the big black plastic thing the needle and spring are situated in. Anyway I could not test my adjustments, wondering if you guys think I am headed in the right direction or am going to make it worse. Thanks

We need to know what year bike you have or at least what size it is 1600 or 1700 also needle manufacturer will need to be known before we can say what clip ot needs to be on. Is the manifold ported, and what is your sea level

When i was running a stock carb on my 1700 with a hypercharger pro, my dual exhaust, ported manifold, and the jet kit that kuryakyn recomended the needle was from factory pro in the kury jet kit its fatter than the barrons so you will need to be richer than with the barrons jet kit. Anyway my jetting was 172.5 main, 37.5 (stock is 35) pilot, and i was on the 3rd clip w/ a washer making it sit at 3.5 my elevation is around 600 and i was getting mid 40's for mpg's

Like i said the kury jet kit came with a factory pro needle and with the stock 35 pilot jet i could not jet the bike right for nothing i was lean on the low and mid throttle and got rich as i got closer to WOT. After i put a bigger pilot in i was able to drop down my main size and got the carb to run right

Sorry about the missing info..anyway it is a 2006 1700. I live close to sea level, probably around 100-150ft if that. As far as the needle brand I have no idea, I didn't see any markings on it. I didn't see any markings on the jets other than the main one which had that square in a square thing. I looked in the manifold and ran my finger around, it doesn't feel rounded off, so I'm guessing its the stock one, not modified....

no markings on the needle what so ever? no wierd letters and number code? knowing the needle brand is pretty important as far as a time thing goes, it will help the gurus here tell you what to set your jetting at and you could roll down the road with a ear to ear smile your right the roadie is no sport bike but 105 seams a little slow not by much though i have had mine up to 120mph so far that nothing compaired to a sport bike but its moving for a cruiser. keep in mind that if you let your bike sit and idle for more than you need she will carbon up bad. also look at your choke knob see if its been trimed down if it has been there will be a small gap between the back of the knob and the rubber nut thingy it pushes up against. if the choke isn't fully seating that will make you run way rich too, there is a tech artice on the choke knob triming.

Thanks Erbman, the pilot jet is a 35, as for the needle I have double and triple checked I don't see anything on it...it has 6 grooves in the blunt end and the spacer and washer setup is the same as most everything I've seen on here. I don't know exactly what I'm looking for on the choke knob but it looks pretty much stock to me minus the chrome cap....nothing looks cut or modified....

Thanks a lot for that link smoke--I trimmed the stop after reading that. I was expecting my choke to feel "open" in the same position but after I trimmed the stop it feels like the choke opens up just a tad more now, the knob moves in maybe an 1/8th to a 1/4 inch more now than it did. I trimmed it down a couple times until it stopped just before touching it. Hopefully between that, new plugs, adjusting my PMS and moving my needle up a clip that will solve my rich running woes!
