Probably MPGs. I think anything below 35 is prolly running richer than you need to. And less than 40 is just wasting $$ Provided you are goosing the throttle all the time. That dumps mileage although sounds kickass with longshots.
But I am a rookie carb guy. The real gurus will chime in shortly.

The old school way was to
put your index finger inside the exhaust pipe and pull it out with the same pressure as pulling a coin across a table.
If it's soot black -rich
If it's light gray - lean
Some where in-between is where you want it
Oh and be sure the pipes have cooled off before you stick your finger in.

You didn't say whether your carb was stock or had been re-jetted.

from everything I have read 3 1/2 is pretty far turned out. I think Curt has said at 4 it can vibrate out.

I started with the PMS at 3.5 out and adjusted it in from there. The 172.5 and clip on 4th from the blunt end with the white washer and a silver washer under the clip is what I run. I ended up with the PMS at 2.75 out. With the bike warmed up try adjusting the PMS in until the engine starts to idle ruff then slowly about 1/8th at a time back it out till it smooths out. Then adjust your idle to 900rpm. If that don't help then look at where your float level is.

You are at 650 ft asl so the 172.5 should be good. If your pipes black inside raise the needle by moving the clip to 3 and put two silver washers under the white spacer. That will put you at 3 1/2 and turn the PMS in to 2 turns out. Crank it up and ride for about 15-20 minutes and then tweak the PMS until it reaches the highest idle possible then adjust your idle speed to around 900 rpm.  When you tweak the PMS go in until it stumbles and then turn it back out until you get the highest idle. I am around the Dallas area and the elevation is about the same here and that is what I had for jetting when I had the OEM carb. I am running a HSR 45 now.

what do you do , if a F.I. bike appears to be running rich? I have some black soot in my pipes.
