DOC Help Double Checking Setting Suggestion 4 Years, 7 Months ago
Doc,

I am not questioning the master I am checking my understanding of the needle and main realtionship. With that said, I am helping a friend jet his bike.
It is an 05 Midnight Silverado, with Roadhouse Doolies, BAK, Barons Stock ported manifold, 170 main, 4th groove PMS 2 turns out AIS removed. It is running very well, but I think too rich as he is getting only around 34-35 mpg at cruising speeds. You had suggested that we start on the 5th groove, and it is a long story so I won't bore you with it we went with the 4th to start. If I go to the 5th groove that would be richer would it not? The needle would sit higher in the main allowing more fuel sooner. Tell me if I am wrong. We are going in right now so I hope you see this one and can respond.

Thank you

Yes you are right 5th grove would richen it. Have you done WOT? If not you need to that will tell you if you are lean. You could go to the 167.5 and try it. I take you are in the mountains or are very high altitude?

You use the 5th groove for the WOT. If the main is good you go down to the 4th and tweak the needle and PMS from there. Does the bike have the stock pilot jet?

Thanks guys, we are at sea level. No WOT test, but judging gas mileage the scoot is too rich. I guess for now I will turn PMS in and see how it runs. We need it to run as he is leaving in the a.m. for a trip up the state, Biketoberfest!!!!

Always question if you don't understand.

Looks like others have responded.

You should also confirm that the float level is to spec. It can confound an otherwise logical jetting.

Sometimes the the enricher valve sticks in the bore meaning the choke is on all the time.

Thank you everyone, this is one of those situations where we need to make time to do some adjust and test. We have him running well, plugs looked good, and I turned the PMS in a about an 1/8 and we will see what happens. When we get another couple of hours I will check the float level, and do a WOT test. Once we have the main we can fuss with the needle.
