carb very rich 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I've got an '05 Roady with V&H powershots, MaxAir air filter, 185 main jet, clip is set on the 3rd slot on the needle, mixture screw is out 2 1/2 turns. I've checked, double checked, and rechecked the float setting and it is right on, yet when I start the bike it is VERY rich. So much so that the enrichener seems to have little effect, and the bike puffs black smoke when you "blip" the throttle. Once the bike is warmed up it runs beautiful. Also I looked down the throat of the carb when the bike was idling and notice that fuel was spitting up out of the hole that the needle fits into, on the bottom half of the carb bore. Anybody have any ideas? This is very annoying. Thanks.

Hi Geezer.

I hear ya, man.....I cleaned my plugs (and gaped them) last night, then I decided to mess with the PMS until I heard the right sound on the bike. But when I rapped the throttle a-little-bit, some gas shot out toward me as I looked into the Carb....this explains why my air filter gets gas in it. Also, my bike has been puffing out black smoke during the winter months. I have adjusted the PMS toward lean and this solved the problem. I believe that since the air is more dense during the winter because of the cold, the molecules become more compact with oxygen and this creates a rich air intake (at least that is my guess); so I close up the air mixture a-little-bit with the pms.

But I anxiously await to hear from someone about the gas spitting out the carb. My bike has been running rich ever since I've gotten it. I can start the bike in any temperature above 40 degrees without using the choke. My guess is that my carb needle is either too high or too skinny - or - my main jet is too big. I plan on going to a dyno soon to take care of this nagging problem.
