frustrated to the moon 2 Years, 9 Months ago
heres what I got, 03 roadstar, V@H longshots, dyna 3000, intake kit, ported manifold, dyno jet kit, 185 main, 40 pilot, 3rd clip, 3 turns, float level set according to this forum, no pump @ pingle pet cock, pulled out inlet screen, vented gas cap.

problems, seem to run out of gas shortly after hitting 100mph.
when cold big hesitation or dies when first turning throttle, improves a little when at running temperature.
called dynojet on two different days and one day they told me I should be running a 195 main, 3rd clip @ 3 turns{seems to big to me from what I have seen on this forum}. Today a different person said I should be running 170m, 3rd clip and 3 turns.

1rst? with my set up what jets should I run, and about where should the screw be?
2nd do I need to enlarge the vent holes in gas cap?
3rd what size is the pilot air jet supose to be, I know stock pilot jet is 35.But dont know about the pilot air jet.

I checked for leaks, and did a wot test, in 4th at 80mph let off a liitle and continued to gain speed. But the bike runs excellent at normal speeds, and I get absolutely no back fire when decelerating.

I have also adjusted the duration screw trying to get rid of the hesitation, fully in and out, didnt make much of a difference. There is a raw fuel smell and some fuel spits back out of carb when wicking throttle. So I am thinking the pilot system is rich.

Again my first concern is what jets to run, I appreciate any help, sorry to be long, trying to cover all details.

Post edited by: sidehillmaster, at: 2006/03/29 20:29

I seem to remember reading that hard accel with the fuel pump removed can cause starvation (you might want to do a search) also could you be hitting the rev limiter and the bike is cutting out?

Sorry I cannot answer the more tyechnical questions...trust me, you are better off if I stick to the pablum

Good Luck!

Regards, Ted

I put the pingle petcock on and vented the cap, when I pull the gas line off, open up the petcock the fuel flow rate is very good. I dont see how the bike could possibly be burning that much gas. And I put a dyna 3000 on to cure the rev limiter problem, I set it at 5000rpm, but I dont know what the rpms are at 100mph. I didnt look at my tack. Maby some one would know. I wouldnt think the bike would be near 5000 rpm at a 100mph but I may be wrong. I have read on this forum of people doing 120mph.

If your loosing steam on WOT then you should think about the main jet which is supplying most of the fuel on full throttle, circuits overlap.

Post edited by: Motostar, at: 2006/03/30 20:05

If you have the stock ECU in your bike, its the rev limiter. I have a "01" it craps out at 106mph!

Have you changed the float bowl needle valve yet? If you're running the stock carb, with no fuel pump, you need to do that. See the article on the home page of this site. If I remember correctly, I think that I was able to hit over a 100 mph while still in 4th gear, like 105. So, you're no where near the rev limit at a 100 in 5th.

I agree with aceman. I have an '05 with V&H powershots, 180 main, clip on the 2nd notch, and no fuel pump, but I changed the float inlet needle to a 230, I have the stock petcock and stock ignition box and I can easily hit 100 to 110mph in 4th gear without hitting the rev limit and no starvation. It is frustrating, one thing I have learned is that it seems all Roady's have their own quirks. What works for one may not for the next. It took me a month of playing with different combos until I hit on the right one, and now it is sweeeeet! Don't get discouraged, good luck.

Thanks aceman and geezer for replying. Yes I have changed out the needle and seat just like the forum said. I pretty much went thruogh this forum and did all the basic mods listed. I will start trying different jetting options and testing more. thanks again
